True, but she said "some new British baby" and I couldn't think of any other new British baby who would fit the criteria for being so honored.

Indeed. Like it too. Considering the time that quote is from, the misrepresentation (reading is the 2nd best enjoyment) is excusable.

It's fine, I guess...but it's really pretty generic. Lots of people have said that or similar, and I doubt many people would identify the quote with JA.

If they are going to put JA on the banknote, they should have the courage of their convictions and *also* put a well known quote from her on the note.

Of course the obvious candidate is It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.

That is the most famous JA quote. That would be great quote for any banknote; much better than the wishy-washy, namby-pamby pap they chose.

Although it wouldn't be my first choice, but I would even be okay if they made it gender neutral:

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man or woman in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a spouse.

True, and even if things aren't changed he will still have to wait for dad and grandpa Charles to either rule or abdicate in his favor. Considering how long Charles himself has been waiting to be king I wouldn't hold my breath if I were the little guy.

What about them? What's the significant of "GAL"? It means nothing to me (except perhaps, as an abbreviation of "Gallon" ).

Unless, of course, we became utter conspiracy theorists and read the names backwards as an indication of future policy: LAG.

GAL might mean a secret brotherhood dedicated to undermining patriarchies (which they're apparently doing already: Damn you, Jane Austen!).

Has George Eliot ever appeared on a note and, if so, was it under the name George Eliot or Mary Ann Evans?

I agree that they could have found a better quote, but it is nice that Jane Austen is there at all. And I sincerely hope she has made it onto a note because of herself and her writings and not only because she was a woman (the linked articles goes a little bit into this direction).

Has a woman ever been featured on a UK banknote just because she happened to be female? The choices can be political in part, but from what I've seen, the accomplishments (or royal position, if one makes a distinction) are real.

I hope to see Thea Musgrave -- one of the greatest composers of the 20th century and still alive! -- honored on a banknote from Scotland someday. Unfortunately, the competition looks to be forbidding.

It must be the Greyhound Awareness League, or maybe the Guild of American Luthiers (they make and repair stringed instruments). Perhaps it's to do with the Spanish Grupos Antiterroristas de Liberacion? Who knows?
