I'm back.
The device shipping with amazing speed, and I have it in hand. Everything went amazingly smoothly, and I am grateful. I had an autofill version of my email address that was wrong -- and that's the one that autofilled when I placed my order using my iPhone. So much for that! Now I have a question about ADE that I've not been able to find an answer to. I followed the directions given to authorize the device with my ADE account -- my Kobo appeared in the ADE application's sidebar, so I dragged & dropped my library to the device. The books appear to be loaded and my wifi is activated. But I can't open the books. In my reader's settings, the name of my ADE account shows, and the only option I'm given is 'deauthorize'. So the device 'knows' it's authorized. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to connect to the internet to enable the book to authenticate with my ADE account. Wifi is on, and nothing's happening; and when it's cabled to my computer it will not permit me to interact with anything -- and it is also not authenticating. I can't find a place in the settings where I can ask it to authenticate -- I just get an error message. Weirdly, in ADE all of my book titles appear normal, but on the actual Mini, they look like computer filenames, with underscores between the words. I see no place where I can change this on the device. Ideas about this? The titles in question are the University of Chicago Press 'free ebook of the month', going back quite a few months. Thank you!... Last edited by thorn; 07-24-2013 at 08:46 PM. Reason: to remove a vestigial half-sentence |

How did you drag and drop your library to the Mini? Did you do this through ADE by dragging the books and dropping them on the KOBOeReader icon in the left column? Or by dragging and dropping the library directly to the Mini's storage? If the latter, you'll have to remove them and re-add them from ADE. Regards, David |

Thank you so much for responding -
In the meantime I seem to have solved the issue, but can't claim to have figured it out. If you know what likely happened and are willing to share, I'd be happy to learn. I can be obsessive about stuff like this -- but I don't have to be, so no pressure. I ended up restoring my device to factory settings and starting over. My first clue that all has (apparently) gone well, is that my book covers now all appear on my homepage. Initially, only a couple of my Kobo-acquired titles did. But in answer to your question: Yes. Within the Adobe Digital Editions UI, I navved to my ADE library, selected the titles I wished to add to the device, & dragged them to the Kobo Mini icon in the left-hand sidebar within Adobe Digital Editions. The books were eventually listed in the Library on the device itself, but on the device the ADE titles showed an underscore_between_each_word, like a 1980's DOS filename, whereas in the ADE library those underscores were not present. Now that all is well, the titles appear as they should (no underscores), so that was clearly also an indication that all was not well. Because the filenames (as opposed to the book titles visible through the UI) actually *do* have those underscores. I like this tiny little thing. A lot. So I hope it remains stable now that it's working. If anyone else has trouble, I'm happy to try to describe more clearly exactly what I did. The solution may be elsewhere, but I didn't find it. I did search Google for a fix, and read of someone with what sounded like a similar issue who started absolutely from scratch -- even going so far as to uninstall and re-install ADE. I do recommend re-setting to factory before taking *that* step, as that was all I needed to do. (So far. heh) |

If it happens again, you can try signing out of your Kobo account and then signing back in so you don't lose any firmware updates or sideloaded content. Sadly, a factory reset is often the quickest way to fix issues -- kinda like saying, just hit him in the head with an axe and he'll be okay. If you use Calibre, DavidFor's KoboUtilities has an option to verify the database. It won't fix it but does let you know it's munged. Regards, David |

I do use Calibre, but am a complete Kobo newbie, so still have a lot to explore. I believe I'm going to enjoy the freedom the Mini will permit me that my Kindles do not. Thank you for the information about the KoboUtilities. I had been unaware of their existence.
I think signing out of my Kobo account may be the one thing I did not try before wiping and starting over. My few Kobo titles were the ones that were fine, and it didn't occur to me that that fact might be a red herring. Cheers - ! |
