I've seen 3 viruses in the wild that affected Linux. I know that's a slow hour for Windows or Android but still if we bury our heads in the sand, we're going to get our a**es blown off.
Admittedly, I work in IT so the question is not "Am I paranoid?", the question is "Am I paranoid enough?". Regards, David |

It is fantastic to be able to use fonts I actually like and have them display properly.

Mine just updated via the Kobo desktop - which is a quick rollout for me - normally I have to wait longer.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Installation Instructions for Direct Zip Files Get a zip file. Unzip the zip file. If going to a previous version, you may want to do a Factory Reset. Connect your deviceto the computer and select Connect on the device (if asked). Make sure that the Kobo Desktop is not running. Copy the entire contents of the zip file to the .kobo directory on the device. Disconnect the device. The Touch will now install the new software. The zip file contains the following: \Upgrade directory and subdirectories - Linux boot and kernal manifest.md5sum - md5 hashes for the \Upgrade directory KoboRoot.tgz - this is the firmware |

PeterT,
If we're splitting hairs you're correct legally, I think, as it isn't our software to disseminate. OTOH, the odds of Kobo having any big problem with it being done, as long as it's not malware or hinky in some way, or OOOOOOOOh, FOR PROFIT, I doubt. There is being correct, and there is being practical. I think we maybe sometimes get a little too caught up in what is proper vs. what is fair as long as no one is hurt, since it won't do anyone without a Kobo reader any good and will in no way harm Kobo's bottom line. Not saying you're wrong, just saying there's not much point discussing just whose horse it is, once it's run off... |

Kobo has always made the firmware links available to us, and has done so in a way that lets us know what devices it is for. Kobo seems to wait to post those links until the fw has been out long enough, to enough users, to be confident about it. That's a good thing. I see no reason for an individual to provide some other a non-kobo link.
The mods have ruled that doing this is against MR rules, using the illegality of distributing material under copyright as the reason. |
