Have you installed a dictionary? It may not show up unless the software detects that you have a dictionary.

I installed the Gnu one that is available here in .prc format, and the BeBook has no way of looking up a word from inside another book as far as I can tell.

Your right about the menu - no. 9 is "Backward", and it takes me back to the correct page in the book. I thought pressing the "page back" button (no. 9) when in the footnote section was supposed to do the same thing, but that will only take you - surprise - one page back..

Yes it is, cause I would have been very pleased to see dictionary support in the mobireader, extremly odd that they don't supply it, since that is one of the strong points with Mobi.

One of the posters at the-ebook.org said that he was successful in using the Longman dictionary. After opening it, a soft keyboard for entering words appeared.

Ok, to bad I don't read Russian (I thik it was)

Anywho, could you please check if there is a step-by-step guide there and I'll try it when I get home. But I don't really see how you should work comfortable with a soft keyboard n the BeBook. I guees moving between characters on it with forward/back and another button too select letter. Very tedious, and will take too long to be really useful.

Just remember, how you enter a text into mobile phone without T9 technology - by repeatedly pressing 0-9 keys.

From the mentioned post: you need to left the book, open dictionary, press "7", choose "index", press Ok and choose the first menu item - and you'll see the on-screen keyboard. Press number key several times to select a letter.

Try this one:
http://mybebook.com/p9/Free-Mobipock...te!/pages.html
(don't worry, you can install it on other V3 clones, not only on BeBooks).

If someone wants to try the dictionary support in the new bebook firmware -- just start with the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (the demo version from the official mobipocket website). The dictionary search does not work the same way as it does on all the other mobi-supported devices. Probably in the future it will be improved.

So, open the Longman Dict. on your V3, press "7", press "1" (Dictionary search), press "Ok" button, press "1" ... and you've got the keyboard ... start typing what you want to find in the "Index" list and press "Ok". Other dictionaries (for example Collins) may not work because the "index" part in those prc-books is not properly created.

Such searching is extremely slow and painful which makes it basically useless, especially if one compares the convenience of that with the mobi-dictionary support on Symbian or Palm.

Agreed - even though I've never tried dictionary on the Palm either (haven't really used it that much). It would come in handy, I guess, to install a dictionary for general use on the V3, but I can't imagine i will be using it much during reading if it requires that many "button-presses".

I suspect that some sort of "running-in-the-background-making-immediate-look-ups-possible"-functionality would be necessary for me to use it actively...

For that, youd probably need a touch sensitive screen/stylus combo... A.k.a Palmpilot or other PDA type device. Works fine on my Ipaq which I used to read on before I got my BeBook, dictionary support on that device was a dream to work with. Sadly tho, I think I will skip dictionary usage on the BeBook. Oh Well, maybe next gen readers will be better suited

The way that dictionary lookup works on the Gen3 is pretty good, even though it doesn't have a stylus. You select "Lookup Mode" from the menu, and that gives you a "word highlight" cursor on the screen, which you can move up, down, left, right with the navigation control. Once the word you want to look up is selected, you press the "Select" key and it looks up the word in the dictionary.

That would work... apart from the fast that there is no navigation control on the V3 models, but I guess you could have "faked" one with normal number buttons.

But yeah, I could live with a function like that
