Hi,

I have the same problem on my Kobo Aura HD ever since it updated from 2.5.2 to 2.6.1.
basically whenever I insert my SD Card (Samsung, 2GB), with any books on it (I tried .cbz and .epubs each in isolation), then booting the device or just inserting the SD card takes a crazy amount of time. Booting could take 30 MINUTES and more, though actual boot times varied between 5 minutes and 50 minutes or so (All this with Wifi off). While booting, only the last two dots remained black, so it looked like booting was frozen.
The effect can well be observed even with just 5 epubs ( 5 MB in total) on the SD card.

Without SD card, all is fine (booting in 3-10 seconds). I only used an SD card because I took books for travelling and also some comic series, and the comic series would not fit on main storage memory. Outside holidays and comics, probably nobody needs to use an SD card in the Kobo.

I tried reformatting the SDCard from VFat to FAT32, and it did not help. For this seems to have only be introduced with 2.6.1, though I cannot be 100% sure.

Reading the books from the SDcard works fine.

Since there was also crazy variation over the booting times, at the time I thought that maybe the device scans for Wifi networks and attempts to connect (even if Wifi is off in settings), such that in areas with more wifi networks, it would take longer. But that was just some blind guess.

It happened for me from the first day I got my Aura in April, and happened more often.

Note that when the SD card has no book files (e.g. only .kobo folder and metadata), then boot time is not affected for me. So it's not the mere presence of an SDCard, but one which has some files to process, which causes the issue for me.

Oddly, I noticed the problem of slow boots with an uSD card inserted with 2.5.1 and 2.5.2 where it could take well over 30 minutes to boot with the uSD card inserted. I did find the more books on the uSD card, the slower the boot. When I upgraded to 2.6.1, the delay is still there but now it's in the 2 minute range with ~1700 books on the uSD card.

David

Going by the numbers I got from 2.5.2, I would guess at around 1 hour minimum with that many books on an uSD card. 2.6.1 is better -- not good, just better.

Hmm... I'm cheating of course but;

My boot times are <2min. for sure, but then Nickel has no real interest in my external uSD card, or the over 6000 ebooks in 28 folders, that it contains. They are for Koreader's use. Besides, Nickel can't even read some of the ebook formats and would find fault with some that it could otherwise read (so much so that it can't process the SD card with any of those files).

I leave my external uSD card in and switch between Nickel (Kobo's user interface with its two reading programs, database, ect...) and Giorgio130's port of Koreader, all the time. The return to Nickel is a reboot. So, I am probably doing more booting than most.

At present there are a number of tricks, tweaks, and hacks involved to have every thing working smoothly, as mine is now. I intend making a "How To" thread or an addition to the Koreader thread in the Developer's sub forum. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=216960
The modding to isolate the external uSD card from Nickel and allow Koreader to read hidden files/folders, starts at page 16 of the thread.

Luck;
Ken

**Warning** This is just unsupported supposition;

I think it greatly depends on what you feed it. I suspect that the "Processing of Content" has excessive time out provisions for some of its data gathering steps on a per file bases and depending on elements it is searching for in each file. So, even for those files that it will process, some will take more time than others. Of course, having thousands compounds the effect.

Luck;

Personally I think there is just too much bloat in the programming of the device by Kobo where the Focus seems (and perhaps for most ebook sellers similar to Kobo/Amazon) to be fast delivery of "Ad" Bloat to promote sales of the actually Ebook books. I can not fault a company for offering ways to bring its content to the user... but there must be a better way to stream line it.

I agree about the focus being on selling books, and while selling books is important to the future of Kobo, I think that some of the amateurish attempts at correctly programming the readers will be detrimental. One example would be sorting the library shelves by the number of books in each shelf.
It goes 1, 11,12, 2, 22, 4, 47, 49, 5 .....

Obviously they are sorting numbers alphabetically and are not the first to make this mistake. Maybe the first that have actually aired it in public in recent years without understanding that it looks a tad foolish, or maybe they really don't know any better.
