I think we had a discount on a selected few scifi ebooks this weekend, about 20% I think, cookbooks the week before, that's the only two I've seen this year.

I have a question. I am 99% sure that I am going to replace my little girl's Lenovo a2107 tablet with a Nook HD.
The Lenovo has a Terrible screen. It is 8gb and has an SD card, yet I feel I can hardly put any apps on it before I get the out of space message. I save everything I can to the internal SD card but it doesn't make much difference. I don't know whether perhaps there is a lot of bloatware or not. So my question is, am I going to run into this same problem if I get her a Nook? I know the screen is 100% better, but how is it on apps and space? I'd like to be able to load as many apps as she wants. I suppose I should get the 16gb. But as a comparison, my other daughter has a 2nd gen Kindle Fire which is 8gb with no SD card slot and I have *never* run into the out of memory message. So I think it is more a problem with the Lenovo firmware, but I could be wrong. That's why I'd like to know from Nook HD users if you have run into any issues like this. Thanks! Unless you install lots of games (some require more than 1GB of additional files), you should be fine. If you want to put movies, use the SD card instead of the internal memory. |

I've only had one kid's game that triggers the "not enough space" message when it tries to update - a game that's never been played BTW and that isn't a large file to begin with. Not to mention that there is 3GB free space left on my internal drive on the HD, so it's got to be some quirk with that particular program.
I've got the 16GB Nook HD and it will hold a lot of apps. The only problem with the Nooks is that they label their internal hard drive "sdcard" so you can't really load apps to an external SD card, which labels itself "ext_sdcard" unless the app itself gives you a choice of where to install/download to and recognizes the "ext_sdcard" designation. The HD does allow you to set the default download location for videos/movies to the external SD card, though. (But if you buy a movie from Google Play and download it, it goes onto the main drive not the external SD card.) You can sideload movies onto the external card, of course. My rule of thumb has always been to buy the device with the most memory I could afford right from the start, because I never know what I will be putting on it in the future. And given that programmers are no longer constrained by limited HD sizes to write programs lean and mean, more space is better, IMO. |

My daughters both have 8gb tablets, never again! As soon as the Nook HD 7" price drops again, I'm getting at least one 16gb. Maybe two. |

You can flash a mod to your Nook that will swap the names of the internal and external storage -- so internal becomes ext_sdcard and external becomes sdcard.
I don't know how this works in practice as I have a 16gb Nook HD, so I didn't feel I needed to conserve space with the internal storage. So I didn't add that change to the one allowing sideloading when I modded the stock ROM recently. But you can read about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2062613 See item #4 in the first post in that thread. It might be worth a try for anyone with only an 8gb Nook HD. --Pat Last edited by PatNY; 07-12-2013 at 10:43 AM. |

I'm pretty sure that setting was accessible on my HD+ when it was stock. I want to say it was under About Tablet>Developer Options or something like that.

You're right. I found the setting. Problem now is that the Nook doesn't show up as an adb device, so I still can't do the mod. I think it has something to do with connecting it in "charge only" mode instead of "file transfer" mode. My phone gives me the option, the Nook doesn't.

Well I just had to come here and gush....after playing with the Nook HD 16gb that I got for my daughter on Wednesday, I talked my other daughter into selling her 2nd gen Fire and taking my Fire HD. I can still use it if I need to, of course. But the Nook is so much nicer. Being able to set your own wallpaper, no carousel, everything is just prettier. Ok, it's a girl thing I guess! But I've got the big Nook HD+ that no one but me seems to want to use at the moment, so I claim it! Better for news and web anyway, which is what I do on a tablet. And way better resolution than my Dell Netbook. I might get me a bluetooth keyboard to pair up with the HD+. That would be awesome!
edit, ordered one with my Discover card reward points. Once that is set up I may lose the tablet to DH....lol Last edited by booklover6; 07-18-2013 at 08:06 AM. |

![]() The Nook is very nice to use. I was planning to put CM on it, then got seduced by the pretty and haven't bothered. I find that Hacker's Keyboard from the Play store works well and I don't really need a physical keyboard. Of course, I don't do a lot of typing on it, so YMMV. |

The Nook HD and HD+ tablets are superior to the Fire HD in many ways but the race doesn't always go to the swift (or best). Betamax was technologically superior to VHS but to no avail. C'est dommage.
