Yes, that's the day I did it, too. Saturday mornings were great.

Later on (as the years passed), I could invariably find these on Sunday.

Wonderful times. I was also able to watch ALL the old Universal horror movies.

I'm a Jeremy Brett fan myself. I have seen him described as 'a Sidney Paget drawing come to life', and that's true, especially in the earlier episodes of the Granada TV series.

And (sad though it is to say), his gaunt appearance due to his battle against cancer in his final years made him even more like Paget's depictions of Holmes.

They have illustrations from the original strand and has book/magazine covers, maps, pictures of London (then and now), of Conan Doyle, various Sherlock Holmes actors/representations. Expect an image for every couple of pages or so through out. Many of the images are in color. Many stories/novels also come with notes (which are really essays of good length) with even more images/illustrations (800 illustrations in total and 200 in color, to be specific).

...

This is of course the best and most comprehensive edition of Sherlock Holmes ever.
The text is the most important thing, and the (literally) months I spent proofing my edition uncovered literally thousands of errors in the public-domain texts which all these editions use. If the text is poor, pictures mean nothing.

AFAIK, he didn't die of cancer, but of heart failure. And in the later Granada episodes, he got bloated because of the drugs he took for his manic depression.

And sad as that is, his own issues may have made him a better Holmes (he seems to have thought so, and calling Holmes a manic depressive is probably not far off the mark...)

True Mr. Brett had had Rheumatic fever (if I recall right) as a child and it affected his heart then was further aggravated by smoking. Holmes had his addictions as well of course (cocaine and Tobacco) which either caused his depressive condition or added to it I'd think. In the old Rathbone movies the matter is mentioned only once that I recall. Holmes says, "Watson, the needle." at the end of Hound of the Baskervilles. The old films (aside from the 1st two) weren't even set in the proper time period, but I remember them fondly as my 1st introduction to the great detective.

I tend to agree. Illustrations are just icing on the cake in the end and if the text itself isn't correct they won't matter much.

True, that. But in my case I have read all the stories/books so many years ago (from print edition) and I keep it just for the feel of it, it is being a classic and all. So, I was compelled by the illustrations etc. in that aspect. This also seems to be pretty comprehensive in that they included introductory essays and detailed notes about few stories etc.

I am almost sure they used the public domain texts you mentioned without much proofreading etc. but if you have any specific details/example errors etc. somewhere, I will just compare it with the book.

Even knowing that it most probably has errors, I still consider that as my favorite edition (might not be for reading, though ).
