Differences with original script:
- it won't start if WiFi is not connected, warning (600x800!) is displayed as usual if wget from server is unsuccessful
- it updates the image automatically every minute (fetch function, sleep 60)
- stops pillow daemon to prevent changes in wifi signal or time from interfering with the top part
- after script is interrupted with a touchscreen press, pillow is started again and you may resume the usage of device

Yes - the Wifi modem is powered down when the processor enters the "suspend" state.

But -
There is a "low power" state which leaves the processor running and still have USB networking up (and wifi powered down).
(Note: At least on the K4 there is, haven't tested others.)

OR -
Maybe just put a "Last report taken at: date/time" on the display before going into full suspend mode.

Translation: This little project could use someone with the time to play with it a bit more. Still has possibilities to be explored.

I've added the -p flag to wifid startup parameters to disable power management (and iwconfig reports it's off), but it still disconnects. This only seems to affect the power savings in normal, non-suspended state.

Yes, that's my preferred way of launching the script. And also the reason why I had to add "sleep 1; eips -g $FILE" - the KUAL launcher tends to overlay the image at times

I've figured fetching the image every minute is inefficient - the weather is updated once every 2 hours or so! There is also a limit on how many times they allow you to call the API (daily), currently at 500 which means the cronjob can be set to run every 3 minutes at your server.

The Linux kernel disconnects NIC devices when entering suspend.

Looking at your access point log should show you if the Wifi radioset is still running.
A thought -
If your access point shows that the Wifi radioset is still running while the kernel is suspended (because of your changes to the power management) -
Then it may be worth checking if the Kindle will respond to "wake on lan" packets.
That function is done in the Wifi hardware, and might "wake" the kernel just like a "USB event" does.

Ah, another thought -
What is the lease time you have assigned to the connection in your access point?
Reason: The Wifi modem can't renew that itself without help from the CPU.

Sorry I don't have a clue about Windows.

Maybe you can find something in the wireless network adapter's documentation or on their web site about the lease time setting.

My ***GUESS*** is that the adapter's hardware is providing the dhcpd service, but there is a chance that it is being provided by Windows or the Windows driver for the device.

OK - we can eliminate the IP address lease expiring as the cause of the frequent disconnects.

604,800 seconds == 7 days.

A dhcp server uses both a "renew" and a "rebind" time, but those are very likely measured in days on your setup also.

The DNS and Gateway addresses are (**probably**, I am guessing) coming from your Windows definition of the Kindle connection.

The Wifi address being assigned, is (**probably**, I am guessing) coming from your access point plug-in device.
Something like:

subnet 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
              range 192.168.0.230 192.168.0.250;
              max-lease-time 604800;
            }

or some such similar thing in the device's configuration file.
(that is the place where other things would also be set)

But none of this should be the cause of the frequent disconnects.

Hey, just wanted to say it seems to have fixed itself. The antenna on my wireless adapter (it's not USB, but a PCI card) was placed at a bad angle.

I want to run it on my PW too, but haven't been able to find any information of how to do it, and much less of how to do it with KUAL.

I know I have to install Python, but I don't know if I should go with these instructables or these others.

Also I don't know what else do I need, appart from KUAL which is already installed and working.

Could you provide some instructions and your weather station package for kual and PW resolution?

I want to get it working as soon as possible to see if I can provide more functionalities to the weather station, or even write a different program. For example I'd love to plot my stocks in a similar way this weather station does. As a Python developer it would be easy to print them in a similar layout, at least with numbers (I don't know if it would be possible to use matplotlib or similar to actually plotting the graphics).

Please provide help to start with and I promise to give a new app for you all soon

I'm running the weather-script.sh and the python script on a linux server, not on Paperwhite. The only thing running on PW in my case is that wget script .
Just thought it's easier to apt-get install than to add a whole different bunch of stuff to PW's folders
