Speed up shutdown?
Hello all. I have a Kindle 4 (not touch). Do you know if there's a way to speed up the power off? By default you must press the button for 7 seconds.

That is not true. There is a difference between sleep mode and shutting down.
ETA: if the screensaver and any display is gone, it is shut down. |

There is a difference between the two but they are both sleep modes. With the blank screen I believe it does not check for updates if you leave Wifi on after putting it to sleep but if you're like me and leave wifi off it makes very little difference which sleep mode you choose. My Kindle loads up the boot screen when it is turned off (K1 and K3), and I turn it back on. That to me means that it was turned off.

As has rightly been said, holding in the power button for 7 seconds does not shut down a Kindle - it's just sleep mode with a blank screen. You'll notice that when you press the power button again it wakes up instantly; it doesn't reboot.

![]() Just to clarify you are not talking about holding the power button down for more than 30 seconds? That reboots the Kindle, Holding it down for 4 Seconds (7 seconds on the k4) only puts it into sleep with a blank screen so when you hit the button again it springs back to life and should show the last page it was on before you put it to sleep. If it's not doing that then something is wrong with the Kindle. |

Absolutely right. There's no way to "power off" a Kindle. You can put it to sleep (press the power button), put it to sleep with a blank screen (hold for 7s), or reboot it (hold for 20-30s) but you can't power it off.

It's really not terrible. The power consumption of a Kindle in sleep mode is very small indeed. Pretty much all the components of the device are powered off.

Zero is smaller than small
![]() Seriously, is there an hack like Kobo Tweaks so I can execute a shell script with shutdown -h now, or busybox poweroff or something? |

No idea, I'm afraid. You might want to ask in the Developer's Corner. Unless you're planning to leave your Kindle for weeks switched off, though, isn't instant on and a tiny power drain better than a 1min+ wait for it to boot?

Yes, I know the User Guide says that, but it's not true. My personal suspicion is that it's there for only one purpose - so that when electronic devices have to "turned off" on a plane, the process results in a blank screen.
As you yourself note, the instant wake-up illustrates that the device is not shut down, but simply asleep. |

Ok, I installed KUAL as suggested me in the Developer's Corner, and now I can really shutdown the Kindle. Thank you all. It's really surprising that the official manual is wrong, maybe it's a software bug. There's really no reason to have a more slow way to put your Kindle in sleep mode.
