Ha ha! Now I resemble that remark. My ringtone's a Dylan song. I decided to have something that I was certain was unique - no question about it being someone else's phone ringing. Usually it's The Times They Are A'changin' but sometimes I switch to All Along the Watchtower. As I tell my colleagues when it rings, it's never a good time when Dylan sings.

LLama Song - I've never heard another phone with it, and I don't really give a fat rat's manky clacker what anyone else thinks of it.

I found a sonar ping for my phone. You should see everyone in earshot look around in surprise, like they're concerned the room they're in is about to be depth-charged. My wife wanted something seriously unique for her phone... at her request, I set her up with the fight scene music from the Star Trek "Amok Time" episode! Now that generates looks! (I have it on my phone, too, but I don't have the stones to use it!) |

I would consider the Star Trek communicator noise, or a bosun's whistle. But I really don't like having things that make noise in my environment. I generally operate computers with the sound turned off, and when I carried a pager, I had it set to vibrate. (Though that can make quite a racket if you leave it on a metal filing cabinet!) In the case of the cell phone, I've solved the problem by not giving anyone the number. |

My cell phone came with a default set of five rings and no way to change it from that base set. I am generally the only one that has a phone that sounds like a phone.

My mobile phone sounds like an old-fashioned phone. I've only given the number to my family and very close friends. And mostly, it's turned off. I get enough trouble with students' phones ringing during lectures, without mine going off as well. (I stop the lecture and look at the offender until he blushes. If he shows any sign of wanting to take the call I say, "Tell them that we're busy." I rarely have to do this twice with the same student.) |
