Thanks - but I asked regarding the Astak reader. I could have missed it, but I thought those two devices to be differing?

My mistake, I had just read the post before yours on plastic logic. The last we heard the initial 6" Astak readers would not include a touch screen. But that was back when they were called Mentor - so we have not heard recently.

yes, it can be very confusing when someone posts off topic items to a thread. The plastic Logic entry does not belong here. I moved it.

I bought a CyBook a few months back to use while waiting on the 9.7" Mentor. I've enjoyed it for eBooks but it is useless for 8-1/2" x 11" PDF's. This is my primary use for such a device, so I'll buy the first truly successful large format PDF capable reader that comes out, Astak or otherwise.

So if its late, fine, as long as it works when it gets here. I'm not worried about saving the last ounce of weight or 1/16" of thickness or what color it is. It just has to work - particularly with all my large PDF's like Petroleum Engineering manuals and the like.

I guess it'll be a really good choice between Astak and Plastic Logic about PDF's reading... I might buy both of them so I could use one some days and the other one some other days, alternatively... :-)

The 5-inch is at the top of my buy list for a dedicated reading device. I noticed that MP3 is one of the listed supported formats, but are there any plans to make it able to play Ogg Vorbis audio files too? My knowledge on formats, openness, and copyright isn't particularly good, but I believe there wouldn't be any patent cost to incorporate it, and I'm sure there are plenty of enthusiastic developers available through the Xiph.Org Foundation who would love to help out with getting the format supported.

Looks like the price of the iRex device is going to be close to $1k. Might be too pricy for some.

Neko, I like you a lot, but this is the third screen size I heard today and now I'm totally puzzled. Is this device growing somehow? Tomorrow it will be 11''.

Also, we all must remember that "announcements" don't mean they will be available that day. It would be nice, but it's not only the case. Google announced Android over a year ago, and the first phone might be being "announced" on the 23.

1) Will ASTAK adopt for 6" model then also for 9.7" model Epson's screen controller S1D13521 mentioned in earlier posts? I don't think it would expect some deep programming for it since it's something hardware...

2) Will the 6" model be splitted in two versions: one full featured and one just with base functionalities with a lower price for no-budgeted people?...

That would be interesting if you could give us an answer, even a simple "actually I don't know the commercial plan" and stuffs... :-)

Thanks

Dear Luigi:

WE badly want the Epson S1D13521 controller; but wanting it and getting it from Epson is not simple! The latest from Epson is the controller will be available in LATE November at earliest (IF all goes well). That MAY miss the first boat as we have to have these units for sale on or about November 27 and in order to do this we would need the new controller in early October. The EZ Reader will be very, very fast... with Apollo controller... and I think you will find it excellent.

Actually, there will be a second more full-featured version with WiFi and possible Touchscreen from Astak planned for March, 2009. The General Manager is going to Taiwan on October 4 with a laundry list of WHAT we know would be absolutely ideal for the March intro! PLEASE... any Forum readers with comments let me know before October 4. We already have down the Epson controller.

Regarding the dictionary with T9... we are going to TRY to get this added before the EZ Reader is released in November. I cannot say for sure; but I desperately want it!

Oh, we did firm up the colors: they will be: Black, Metallic Red, and Electric Blue... very similar to Apple iPod Nano colors if you want some idea in advance.

Astak trusts Dale DePriest of MobileRead Forum a lot! This man has kind of been a guiding light in my sea of darkness. As such, I am entrusting the official post on the EZ Reader to Dale to announce and post! I expect he will post this on or around September 26. Ciao!!
