More helpful to new users would be a forced dialog stating a new feature has been added to calibre and that the user will need to update their custom toolbar settings (with instructions) in order to access the feature.

How would you propose 'new users' be identified. I don't want Calibre to be my Nanny thank you

I assume most Calibre users can read, maybe at the end of the install there should be an option to read the release notes, preferably in a text file that comes with the install.

A New User would be any installation that does not have an existing configuration folder.

Probably you have connect to folder or ITunes set. Send to device only appears if a device is connected.

For a first time new user All Features are New Features - so there is no need to specifically tell them about this weeks New Features - they don't care if it was just added or if its been their since the Big Bang

Apologies to the thread, I was unintentionally vague. By New Users I actually meant anyone who doesn't already have the plugin installed.

So this would pretty much be an automatic one-time displayed dialog and then never seen again. But it would assume the user is new to using calibre and provide clearer instructions so they better understand how to get the icon to appear.

To everybody who has contributed to this thread:

I don't have iTunes, so calibre can't be connected to it. If I boot, no device plugged in,run calibre and I right-click on a book I always get a context menu:
Code:
Edit metadata
Send to device
View
If I hover the mouse over Send to device I get a sub-menu with all references to device greyed out, because there is no device connected.

Regarding Copy to Library. the original thread I found, the calibre manual and the first few posts to this thread all said Select files, right-click, and select Copy to library. The natural instinct is to right-click on one of the selected books. This does not give the option Copy to library.

I may be wrong, but the only way I can see to do this is to have the Copy to library icon on the toolbar.

I don't quite see where new features, first installs, etc. comes into it. The point is one uses the Copy to library icon, not right-clicking on a file. Unless of course, my version of calibre runs diffently to everyone else's.

CTL (as a menu item) is a configurable toolbar item.
It has been so long, that I can't say if it appears by 'default'. or you removed it at some time.
But, you can easily place it Now:
Preferences: Toolbars: Select Context Menu ( << not the one with device connected): from the LEFT column select 'Copy to Library': click the transfer arrow in the center: move up to desired location: apply/OK
(restart calibre for grins)

Mmm, I can't remember if it was there and I removed it either. I have "installed" it and used it.

Still, the manual should say use the icon, and not select books and right-click.

YMMV but I use right clicks all the time on a single or selected group of items everywhere, not just in Calibre. The menu is for Everything

Aha! Copy to library must be added to the context menu. This is definitely not there by default.

Never thought of fiddling with the context menu, must give it a think.

This is definitely there by default and will show up automatically the moment you create more than one library in calibre.
