The first story in Beginnings kind of put me off, given the problem you sited. So I decided to try something else. Read a couple of stories the A Liaden Universe Constellation , then over to Draw One in the Dark. We'll see...

Yup! I really like his style.
Well, I also finished Perdido Street Station and this was amazing. I know why some people say you either love or hate Mieville. I guess I'm in the love camp ![]() Next up, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. Another book from my challenge. And another long book as well. Will see how it goes ![]() Last edited by Geralt; 06-21-2013 at 02:09 AM. |

Two more books read this week:
"The Man in the Brown Suit" by Agatha Christie. Her 4th novel, originally published in 1924. This is an excellent "thriller", and tells the story of a young woman's search to uncover the mystery of the death that she is a witness to of a man on the London Underground. The story is largely set in South Africa (a country which Christie had recently visited herself). If you've only ever read Christie's detective novels this is well worth reading. "The Pothunters" by P.G. Wodehouse, originally published in 1902. Wodehouse is best known for his "Jeeves" and "Blandings Castle" books, but I've always had a soft spot for his "School" books, of which this is the first. The book (like most in the series) is set in St Austin's, a (fictional) minor public (ie private) school. There's been a burglary in which several of the school's sports cups (these are the "pots" of the title) have been stolen, and some of the boys set out to try to solve the mystery and recover the cups. A quick read, but very enjoyable indeed. |

However, I was an anti-fan of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. I think I got close to half way before I gave up on it - one of the few times that's ever happened to me with a novel. |

I've read the whole series, and have now just started Deeply Odd, the latest release. I think as a whole the series is inconsistent, and hasn't really delivered on the promise of the first two or three books, veering off into rather strange territory particularly with the 5th one, Odd Apocalypse. Still, I am persevering ![]() |

![]() However I hear that The City...is quite a different style to Perdido SS. So not on my priority list to read from. Right now that priority list looks like this. 1. King Rat 2. The Scar (New Crobuzon, #2) 3. Iron Council (New Crobuzon, #3) I see now, I picked some controversial books for my challenge :] |

Next up: A Liaden Universe Constellation: Volume 1. Although this will be a quick read, as only one of the stories is new to me, the last one: "Sweet Waters". All the others appear in Liaden Unibus Volume I or II. |
