I finished Odd Thomas last night - and was again impressed with Koontz's ability to combine laugh-out-loud humor with truly horrendous violence and personal tragedy, and truly scary situations -- a balancing act I've only encountered well done before in Colin Cotterill's Dr. Siri series (which, come to think of it, Odd Thomas does resemble somewhat). Combining devastating personal loss with hope and optimism - without being preachy or cloying - in the midst of a cracking good thriller with "things that go bump in the night" - hard to beat.

Moving on to the next 'Odd' book for next Saturday's "fun" read (Forever Odd) - to see if Koontz can avoid the "sophomore slump" of the 2nd book in a series.

I've started reading Bad Monkey by Carl Hiaasen.

Quote:
Andrew Yancy—late of the Miami Police and soon-to-be-late of the Monroe County sheriff's office—has a human arm in his freezer. There's a logical (Hiaasenian) explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its shadowy owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, the sheriff might rescue him from his grisly Health Inspector gig (it's not called the roach patrol for nothing). But first—this being Hiaasen country- Yancy must negotiate an obstacle course of wildly unpredictable events with a crew of even more wildly unpredictable characters, including his just-ex lover, a hot-blooded fugitive from Kansas; the twitchy widow of the frozen arm; two avariciously optimistic real-estate speculators; the Bahamian voodoo witch known as the Dragon Queen, whose suitors are blinded unto death by her peculiar charms; Yancy's new true love, a kinky coroner; and the eponymous bad monkey, who with hilarious aplomb earns his place among Carl Hiaasen's greatest characters. Here is Hiaasen doing what he does better than anyone else: spinning a tale at once fiercely pointed and wickedly funny in which the greedy, the corrupt, and the degraders of what's left of pristine Florida—now, of the Bahamas as well—get their comeuppance in mordantly ingenious, diabolically entertaining fashion.

Never having read anything by Dean Koontz, I went with Watchers. I found that to be very good. Have you read Watchers?

Lol. I just picked up my hold request from the library for this one. It had been recommended by an acquaintance when I was looking for random ideas for this year's reading challenge.

Reading a new novel by Neil Gaiman that came out yesterday. "The Ocean at the End of the Lane". 15% in, so far so good. Here's hoping it will be as entertaining as American Gods was.

Also an enjoyable issue. I'm not sure what I'll read next. Probably one of Baen's July's Bundle that has just come out.

[EDIT] I've decided: Noah’s Boy by Sarah A. Hoyt

Yep, Stephen King also has another son named Owen King who is a writer.

Just Finished:

- NOS4A2 by Joe Hill - Better than Heart-Shaped Box, not as good as Horns. Joe Hill is becoming one of my favorite writers, though.

Currently Reading:

- O Jerusalem by Laurie R. King (58%)
- Joseph Anton by Salman Rushdie (54%)

That is next on my list. I'm even considering pausing "Golden Fool", the book I'm currently reading, to read it. I just might...

I still have Stephen King's Joyland which I haven't started yet, but Neil Gaiman is next after that. Glad to hear it's good.

Not yet ... but I plan on expanding beyond the 'Odd' series - I'll definitely try 'Watchers' next. Thanks!

So, is that one that I can start with? Or do I really need to have read prior ones in the series? (Though I think I'm going to start with the new Honorverse compendium.)

I finally finished Dominic Sandbrook's Seasons In The Sun. It has altered my view of that period (which I had viewed distantly from North America). In particular, James Callaghan , Michael Foot and Denis Healey look much better, and Harold Wilson comes off looking much worse.

That's enough extract-of-malt for a while. Time for some hunny - about to start Larry Bond's Red Dragon Rising series.
