Sometimes it does take a few tries. Are you sure you didn't make some letters caps (for modem password) and then forget to do so when trying to log on? Or maybe you are too far away from the wireless connection. And if the battery power is low that might affect things.

Tonight I will reboot my router like the Kindle troubleshooting suggests. My Kindle works fine on other Wifi networks.

I found out I was never able to connect to secured networks if I used the "Advanced" section of WiFi configuration. Are you sure you're not doing the same?
