It's a bit unfair to presume at this point the device will have overheating issues. That "unified thermal core" actually sounds like a great idea. It remains to be seen, of course, how well it works. It's hard to believe Apple didn't test this through and through, though. This is not some toy for kids to show off in front of their friends. It's a professional machine, people will need to rely on it for their livelihood. Nothing will kill such a product faster than reliability issues.

As for expandability, well, I too prefer to have one bigger box under the table instead of several smaller ones on it. But it's probably not the first time for Apple to choose form over function. Or screw their customers by making their expensive and perfectly well working equipment obsolete. Such as PCI cards, in this case. Of course, there are Thunderbolt expansion chassis out there, but they get quite expensive too.

The news forum is

"News

The release of a new high-end desktop computer shouldn't be posted to News, either.

The Ars Technica piece on the "Darth Pro" hits most of the concerns we've mentioned (WRT pro usage of Macs and the necessary requirements) and many we haven't:

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/06...e-new-mac-pro/

The majority of the comments -- even the most admiring -- reiterate those concerns.

Your link points to the compilation of stories of that date, the link for the reference story is this.

That doesn't surprise me, avf. I had to leave work right then; my only choice was to post without the link or copy it in haste.

However, I've fixed the first link, and the second was right to begin with.

Now that that's out of the way, what did you think of the article?

Some of the comments are more astute than the piece, but what I liked was the emphasis on a pro user's requirements and the number of professionals who responded. They didn't sound pleased, did they? They weren't fanboys, either -- just people who needed to do their jobs and didn't like the issues raised by the Darth Pro: Inflexibility, lack of access, inability to upgrade, annoyingly limiting I/O formats, fixed graphic cards, four USB slots, the possibility of heat and noise issues, etc., etc.

That thing seems to be pretty superfluous.

They might still try to sell it as art, then ...

I think that, as it seems to be these days for apple, they prioritized form over function. It looks nice, but a workstation should be easily upgradable, and that's not an option with the new mac pro. The graphics cards are custom made, so you can't upgrade them, and having to pile up your storage on your desk, with their own power supplies and octopus of cables, is no substitute for internal storage. I'd rather have a more conventional looking workstation with plenty of internal storage bays and standard slots for expansion. After all, the workstation is supposed to be "something you work with", not "something you stare at".

The picture I liked best showed a cat curled up on top... sorry I can't find it now. Don't know if a cat would fit, actually; I suspect Photoshopping. I stand by my previous chimney comment.

A suggestion:

Why not put moved threads into a forum for moved threads and keep them out of the busy, crowded, and constantly updated Lounge?

For the most part if you move something into the Lounge when it did not start there, it kills the thread. (Not all the time, but most of the time.)

You could make this suggestion in Feedback if you wish.

But I don't see why you expect vigorous discussion of a new high-end desktop computer on a forum dedicated to mobile reading devices.

Thank you for the reminder pdurrant.

I have carefully read the rules and procedures, and could carry on about them like my father, a lawyer, if I wished, or I could slide around them with great ease as I have learned to do over the years in my work.

I normally don't bother to do that, though I admit there have been 1 or 2 times where I considered action.

But still, I am perplexed by your saying above, "But I don't see why you expect vigorous discussion of a new high end desk top, ..."

Using that mode of thinking as a standard, we would expect a lesser discussed topic, which you are inferring the Mac Book subject to be, to slide quickly to the bottom of the "page" and then on out of sight.

We would expect that, wouldn't we? Or not?

That question is what is perplexing.
