So your goal was to check whether the database was corrupted, so that you know if that was the reason you were having various issues, correct? That was why davidfor had you add this plugin from what I understand.

So attach your device. On your menu bar (where-ever you put it) there should be something called "KoboUtilities". It has the kobo logo on it. Beside the "button", there is a small arrow (to the right of the button). Click on this. A whole lot of options pop up. One is labelled "Database". Use your mouse to hover over the word Database and you will see two options pop up. One is "Check the device database". Click on this.

As davidfor mentioned, if it says "ok", there is no corruption. If it says anything else, the database IS corrupt....and since you didn't see any improvement with signing out and in again, I believe your only choice is to do a factory reset.

If it says ok, then your problems lie elsewhere.

Thank you will try that. You are all very helpful
Also do I need to keep syncing for the moment to kobo as I have lots of other ebooks I just want to read on my kobo first?

Do I need the other plugin I downloaded by mistake?

I mainly sync when I think it will do something. So, mainly just after I buy a book from Kobo. If I am reading a downloaded kepub, it will sync the reading position automatically. This happens when you open or close the book or the device goes to sleep.

That depends. The main purpose of the extended driver plugin is to sideload epubs as kepubs. If you want to read books this way, then you should use it. If you don't, then you can remove it. I don't use it, but, I'm probably not the right person to ask about the pros and cons.

I am just adding lots of free books I find here and there (eg smashwords) to my kobo or Nexus 7
They all are ok to read What is the difference epubs to kepubs then?

A kepub is basically an epub with some extra ids. The kepub reader uses this for locations. The visible differences are displays. The kepub reader displays the title at the top of the page, page numbers the bottom are displayed within the current chapter. The kepub reader also has extra stats, showing chapter progress, time remaining for the chapter and the next chapter.

The best thing to do is try both and see which you like. If you have purchased a book from Kobo, download it and reading it and see which you like the best.

If you are happy how things are, no need to change the epubs to kepubs, so you don't need the extra plugin. And you don't need to sync unless you are using kepubs. Or you want new firmware.

Have fun reading
