Question Perplexing .mobi -> .epub

Hi there,

I've used Calibre a few times to convert from .mobi to .epub, without any particular difficulties. This time it won't work properly for two books I've just tried, here's the problem:

The epub works perfectly well in Calibre itself
On my ereader neither book will open past the first chapter. Instead the device seems to crash and needs to reopen.

I've tried to send the files to both the main memory and the memory card - to no avail. Other books bought recently (as epubs) all work perfectly well.

The ereader is a Sony PRS650.

I'd be grateful if anyone can give me a hand, it's for work / study that I need the books, and of course I've paid for them properly, and the conversion is for my own use.

It's likely that your mobi file is a KF8 and contains some formatting that your 650 cannot handle. Impossible to say more without access to the files. You can use a big hammer to dumb down the markup. Do a mobi to mobi conversion which will give you an old style mobi, then delete the ORIGINAL_MOBI file and convert the remaining mobi to epub. Or do a mobi to RTF conversion and convert the RTF to EPUB, though you will lose a *lot* more formatting that way.

If it is an AZW3, use the KindleUnpack plugin to shift the KF8 files to ePub. Then use epubcheck 3.0.1 to check for errors. Use Sigil to fix the errors. Once fixed, you should be good to go.
