Well, this is the second time that I come to Mobile Read to learn that Kobo firmware is available for a couple of days, but not to me.
This morning, I tried at least ten times to sync, and my touch was "looking for an update" for a second, every time. Took his sweet time to "download content", every time. The trouble is, there was no new content to download. There is a new firmware, as I am still running 2.5.2. Has anybody figured out when do they declare a general availability for the new firmware images, so that any owner can download them? |

When new firmware is released it is sent out on a rolling basis . . so a few people get it first and then it spreads out to everyone. Obviously the new 2.6.1 hasn't reached your area yet - so your reader stays on 2.5.2. If you wait a few more days it will be with you . . or you can sideload the new firmware if you feel confident by going here and following the instructions ![]() https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=185660 |

It's been almost 2yrs that I've had my touch and I still can't figure out how they roll out the updates. My buddy got a notification on his touch yesterday that the new firmware was available. His wife's touch did not. I live 20min from him in the same city and I still am not seeing anything today.

The only thing was I had to re-replace the dictionary file, since it over-wrote it with the kobo dictionary during the update. I don't know if that is what usually happens as this is my first fw upgrade since adding a custom dictionary. |

I speculate that this may change in the future, as the longer I have the device, the less likely I am to be in their guinea pig list...so in a few years when there are many new devices, I may not be the first anymore. I say this since you are talking about a lot of Touches, which are not newest...though they probably roll to a certain number of older devices at the same time so that any potential problems will be made known before everyone gets the update. Who knows in reality, though eh. |

It's more than a theory. It's what we were told in the beta. They currently start with a small "partnership" with bigger partnerships, like Indigo in Canada, rolling out later. In some instances, they are also waiting for feedback from particular partners before rolling it out. I have no idea what exactly that may mean. Speculation: for partnerships where the partner provices the tech support, it may be a need for training time. They may change this, at some point, but this is how the current rollout is being conducted.

I'm not sure what I find more amazing: that they don't bother to fix this, or that most of the discussion in this thread is taken up by GUI details that seem very to me in comparison, as they mainly concern the state of the ereader when you're *not* reading it (such as the sleep screen). This seems to be a malfunction of one of its basic functions: displaying text the way it should be, mimicking its display on a paper page (but with more flexibility for the user in terms of font size). And it's still there, I gather. Big bummer. I'd accept the ugliest sleep screen just to get *this* fixed. |
