[Device Plugin] Kobo Touch Extended Driver - Page 27

Ok, this seems to be a problem with most, if not all of my books. Could it be a result of the DRM-stripping process?

It seems so strange, because all the files this happened with, were already re-converted and worked fine, cover art could be changed with no problems. But then I used the Count Pages plugin, and it stopped working.

I just thought about something. Can you upload a book that you already know isn't displaying the cover properly, then eject and unplug your device, then plug the device in again and see if that works?

Failing that, can you find a new book that does work, make a copy of the ePub file, remove it from your device, then run Count Pages on it and if it no longer shows the cover send me both the version before running Count Pages and after running Count Pages?

Ok, I'll try that. I have a few Bujold books that were published without DRM, that I know worked the last time. Not sure if I can do it today though.

Ah, I had to try. Can't leave a potential solution waiting :-) So I did this to the book I already sent you, and sure enough, the updated cover art showed up in the homepage, but when I clicked it to read, I got the "Oops! This document couldn't be opened. There might be a problem with the file. Etc" error.

Then I tried with another file that was non-DRM-ed from the publisher, and with that one everything worked as it should. Cover, check. Book-jacket, check. Able to read the file, check.

I guess everything points to my DRM removal software mucking things up?

Looks like it. Unfortunately we can't offer support for DRM removal so you're on your own for sorting that out.

It's fine. I'll just have to reconvert everything epub-epub. I won't have quite as pristine files, and on some level it offends my OCD, but it does solve the problem.

@Joques: Have you ever tried looking for Apprentice Alf and using his tools, as opposed to the Fastspring offering?

Peter T, I have been pointed in that direction already, yes :-) Thing is, I already have about 600 books, and I'm not sure if re-downloading and reprocessing is really feasible.

Same here - all books that were giving me trouble synced just fine after epub-epub conversion.

This kind of falls outside the scope of this plugin, but since we're already modifying the epubs and addressing Kobo-specific features, perhaps a toggle could be added in the options for a orphans/widows fix? While Kobo follows the ePub standard, it results in some poor text distribution. An easy fix is setting orphans and widows to 0 in the style sheet for the book. Could we automate this process inside this plugin so I don't have to manually do it? It seems to be a Kobo-specific problem, so it'd be nice to not modify the original ePub on my hard drive.

I don't think I need to tweak CSS for that, put in a GitHub bug report and I'll think about how I could accomplish this and see what needs doing to accomplish this.

I've been approached to do the same thing in the main driver. And they supplied code, some of which you would recognize

Generally, I'm not a fan of doing this sort of thing as I fix my books before putting them on the device. But, I'm considering this.
