I can confirm what Andrea discovered - I did exactly that back when this discussion was new and Calibre has been working fine.

I wonder, though, what the ramifications of this change will be in other processes. Giving 'everyone' full control makes me nervous (even though I'm the only user on this computer).

I have noticed that it is possible to lose the UAC request on W7 if some other program (other than the installer) has (taken) current focus during the install. As painful as it is, try closing all other programs before beginning the install.

IMHO Full control to everyone is a Shotgun approach work-around, rather than discovering the correct permission setting.

See Post 10 - https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=199946

Might be a better approach.

Also make sure that you are the Owner of your Home directory C:/Users/«username». You set that in Properties->Security->Advanced->Owner(tab)->Edit. I would always tick the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects box.

Rather than fixing Start Buttons MS should implement a security subset that people other than Corporate System Administrators and IT Security Comptrollers can comprehend.

At the bottom of the Properties->Security sheet there is a link to Learn about access control and permissions - this brings up an eye glazing CHM that does explain what it all means, but... see prior para.

I'm wondering what it is that's causing these permission errors with the temp directory. I've used Windows since version 3.1 and I've never had such an error.

I just looked at temp directory of each user temp space on my machine and each temp directory has full control set. I do not recall specifically changing any of them.

I wonder if the the people who experience these errors get similar problems with other applications - lots of other programs create temporary folders and files in the same location.

Likewise

But friends have had similar problems, and in every case when I've looked at the Access Control settings they were a dogs breakfast. In some instances I'm sure it was initiated by PC vendors and PC retailers. Sometimes I've done a fresh Windows install rather than trying to work through the shambles.

I also wonder if some of the candyware messes around with ACLs.

I suspect there is some piece of malware, most likely a security program of some sort, that has decided that removing the execute permission on temp is a good idea as it prevents execution of .exe/.dll/.ttf files from temp directories. Unfortunately, the way they do it is also preventing the execution of directories (i.e. changing into a directory). This will only affect programs that change into directories in the temp folder. calibre's viewer and conversion routines do this, so it is affected.

Kovid, I tend to agree - and I also wonder if there are two issues - permissions and ownership

I've lost count of the number of people who've contacted me to ask if I could fix their computers, which have 'acquired' bits of very well known security products on their desktops. And almost invariably I've been able to demonstrate that it got there because they clicked on the wrong thing. Its not bogus, it comes from the real vendors - one in the USA, the other in Germany.

You probably get pestered by OpenCandy etc all the time. I recently downloaded something from Sourceforge that came with OpenCandy gifts, the wording in the dialogues was diabolically devious, so its easy to understand how people get caught by this stuff.

Indeed, the pesky ads in installers crowd are the bane of my existence. They are dammed persistent and simply refuse to accept that there exist people in this world that wont do absolutely anything for more money. Recently, Sourceforge itself has started an ads in installers program, at least they haven't yet tried to contact me more than once.

I go along with those things mentioned as causes but add "User sticky fingers" as a very common cause to the list .

Comment on Randy's case is as I said before, somehow in converting from Windows 7 to Windows 8 he has ended up with a User account named Windows 7. Now whether this actually appears as a real Account in his Windows 8 installation or not, and assuming he did not create a User named Windows 7 oneself then he has done some thing wrong - perhaps along the lines I suggested earlier. One thing is for sure, if he didn't create it and he has now reduced its User folder security permissions other problems of some kind or another arising downstream in time seem to be of pretty high probablility.

I also go along with theducks, giving full control to Everyone in ones User folder is just a shotgun attack asking for trouble downstream in time. Everyone should not have any permissions whatsoever.
