I don't buy it. I have no real personal investment in it--emotional or otherwise--I just don't buy it.

If Google shift from Android to Chrome, I'll have to shift my recommendations from Android to something else too, but it won't be ChromeOS. Too much cloud dependancy.

It'd be a shame if they did though, the nexus 7 is quite a nice tablet with a decent amount of power considering the low price tag.

It could happen, but there's a huge existing android base which works against it.

Agreed. A shift from Android to ChromeOS would nuke the hell out of the Android fanbase, as well as shafting everyone who wants to run something that isn't Apple or MS.

If they do I suspect Samsung would continue development of Android, effectively branching it.

I don't see companies going for ChromeOS on phones, it doesn't allow for customisation, so there is little to differentiate. If this is the case then you may as well use a Windows variant, as a) it does allow customisation and b) I suspect MS are happy to fund transition...

Wouldn't app devs have to retool for portable device app development? Seems to me you'd have a bit of a catch-22: devs waiting for a demand for chrome apps from a solid userbase, and a userbase waiting on devs to provide a solid chrome app environment before considering switching from Android devices.

Gotta have the apps to lure the users to lure the devs to make the apps.

It wasn't hard to get people to take a chance on a fledgling "not Apple" ecosystem. But I think it would be a lot more difficult to lure people from a vibrant Android ecosystem to a fledgling "almost-but-not-quite Android" ecosystem.

Not to say they won't try more Chrome devices out, mind you. I just don't see them going for a wholesale "replacement."

Well, reading past the title of the article, it says toward the end that Android will still be around and still be developing (as usual by myriads of people and companies) but that Google will push Chrome OS as a consistent, more reliable operating system because there will be fewer cooks in the kitchen.

Seems like something for everyone.

Heck, maybe we could even have a dual boot.

I think that the premise of the article is wrong. The reasons why Google would prefer Chrome are the reasons why manufacturers would prefer Android.

I don't see it either. I mean sure they could add in some features from Chrome to Android but when you have a brand name that dominates the market you're not going to change to something else. That would be suicide.
