They cost £4.99 in the UK, which is about CAD$7.90.

I adore Hand's writing if not always her endings and this book won the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature in 1996.
Wow! That was really worth it!

Elizabeth Hand really is a marvellous writer. Her prose is magnificent. And I always love the central characters she creates. This story just carried me away, enough that I resented being away from it for too long.

Like other books the ending is kind of like the pile-up at the end of a long car chase. But this didn't really bother me. The only real issue that made my lip curl was the introduction of a random character with obscure knowledge that triggered the penny dropping. That famous moment: "Wait! What did you say?!". Argh!

Now - it's on to an indie again. Our own Terry C. Simpson's Game of Souls. I've read a couple of good things about this book from some members here so I'm hoping to have a similarly satisfying experience myself.

I finished Earthbound by Joe Haldeman... and I must say, it was a disappointment. I assume it is not the last book in this series... but it certainly is the last one I will read.

The series started out great and got worse as it went along. Well, at least to me the story did.

Anyway, not sure what to read next, but I am finishing up Surely You're Joking Mr Feynman.

I wanted to read Under the Dome before the TV series started, but of course, it is over my personal no-more-than-$10 ebook price.. so I guess I'll have to find something else.

What do people think of Fall of Giants? Is it up to Pillars of the Earth caliber?

Kobo's price is $9.79 and discountable, if you take a vacation to Mexico.

Cool Carolyn Keene (Mildred A Wirt) & Richard Castle

The Iron Jackal was a really great read and I'm looking forward to the release of the 4th book in the Tales of the Ketty Jay series The Ace of Skulls which has an expected publication date of September 19th.

The next Nancy Drew book I'll be reading will be The Mystery of the Tolling Bell (#23) by Carolyn Keene (Mildred A Wirt) along with Such Wicked Friends (Sandy Reid Mysteries #3) by Rod Hoisington.
I very much enjoyed reading The Mystery of the Tolling Bell as it was a nostalgic and fun read. Such Wicked Friends was an interesting story and the setting, which is actually the entire Sandy Reid series' setting, gave me a nostalgic blast back to John D. MacDonald's Florida-based Travis McGee series.

So next I'll be reading The Clue in the Old Album (Nancy Drew #24) by Carolyn Keene (Mildred A Wirt) along with A Raging Storm (Derrick Storm Trilogy #2) and A Bloody Storm (Derrick Storm Trilogy #3) both by Richard Castle.

I may need to hold off on continuing this book for a bit though because my hold of Among Others by Jo Walton just came in at the library - I was #11 on the list yesterday, so several people must have cancelled theirs. I am interested enough to read this one whether or not it wins the book club.
I finished My Man Jeeves last week and really liked it. I will definitely keep going in that series.

I was very apprehensive when I started Among Others since it doesn't sound like the type of book I normally care for. As I said to my wife, a book about a young girl who happens to see fairies just doesn't seem that interesting to me. The main reason I even started it was because it was nominated for the June book club so I ordered it at my library in the hopes that I could get it by the middle of June and be able to participate if it was selected. I am very glad that I read it when it came in even though it wasn't selected, it was quite remarkable and a deserving winner of the Hugo and Nebula awards (not that I have read many of the winners to compare).

Now I am reading a non-fiction story about Albrecht Dürer, How the Great Hoax Began (Crimes in the Art: The Secret Cipher of Albrecht Dürer). So far it isn't bad and the conspiracy/hoax is an interesting premise, although I am not yet convinced that it is non-fiction.

Reading an OLD classic. Andre Norton's Witch World. I haven't read any of her books in years, but came across this original in the series and thought it might be a hoot.

Read The Three Musketeers and loved it. Ran through Journey to the Center of the Earth which was fun and now giving Dracula a serious go (I last read it as a kid and despised it).

You know that "The Three Musketeers" is merely the first part of a very, VERY much longer work: "The D'Artagnan Romances"? The whole thing is in the MR library, under that title, in 4 volumes.

An excellent collection of anecdotes. There is a second collection:
'What Do You Care What Other People Think?': Further Adventures of a Curious Character

And very good it is too. I read them at the beginning of last year.

Excellent. But not one to come to without having read the previous books in the series.

Next: Hokas Pokas! by Poul Anderson and Gordon R. Dickinson. This is my earliest (bought 19 Mar 2002) unread book in my calibre database. I wonder if I've read it and forgotten that I've done so?

What is the best way to download these 4 epubs from the library? I think it's time I broadened my horizons.

EDIT: I should have said 'best way to download 'all at the same time.'

But can The Three Musketeers be read as a stand-alone novel? Does it have a satisfying ending?

Having completed the "Inspector Alleyn" series by Ngaio Marsh, I'm now starting to read the whole of Agatha Christie's non-romance works in order. Her first book was of course "The Mysterious Affair at Styles", published in 1920 (but set during WWI), in which we are first introduced to Hercule Poirot, via his regular "sidekick-to-be", Captain Hastings. We also meet Inspector Japp of Scotland Yard, another regular (and not only in the Poirot books; he also shows up in other books, too). An excellent book; a wealthy old lady dies from strychnine poisoning. Who did the deed? Although I've read this several times previously, one of the benefits of increasing age and declining memory is that I was still surprised by the outcome .
