[Device Plugin] Kobo Touch Extended Driver - Page 26

davidfor had recently commented that the growler issue looks to be a timing issue, and that it was just the way it is! Luckily it's a cosmetic issue; there is very little difference in the Kobo firmwares for the different devices.

After deleting an re-adding my novels with the Extended driver, I have found several that would give parsing errors / failure to communicate with device. These were files that would upload without problem using the Kobo Touch driver.

Example: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

I had a few books that had similar issues, AJvK. I put a check next to "silently ignore...) and they loaded. Not sure if that is what I should have done.

Can you put in a GitHub bug report so I remember to look at this when I have time? Directions are in the first post of this thread for what I need in a bug report, the book can be uploaded to any online syncing service (Copy.com, Dropbox, SpiderOak, Microsoft SkyDrive, etc.) and a link to the file sent to me either in the GitHub bug report or via PM here.

That depends

With the "Silently Ignore" option enabled, the books would have been uploaded as regular ePubs without any of the extras from the extended driver.

Ops, big problem for me: I just installed and ran Kiwidude's Count Pages plugin - and now when I transfer books to the Kobo, they arrive with no cover art even though I checked the "upload cover for books" box in the extended driver. I assume there is some kind of metadata conflict going on that my Kobo isn't able to resolve?

All the other kepub stuff works fine, but the covers are MIA.

I only used the Count Pages plugin to calculate a page count which I would then append mannually to the end of every book title - but now I'm not even sure if I can purge that metadata from my book files!

I just tried to re-transfer without the extended driver, just the original one, and confirmed that it transferred fine with cover art showing up.

I'll put it up for you. And that Silently Ignore is quite clever: I had already thought of switching between the Kobo Touch driver and the Extended driver, but that would mean I would have had to recreate my plugboard every time. This is so much better!
Edit: Except it really isn't - if I read the popup text correctly the offending book is just being ignored. That's what I'm seeing: I tried it with one of my offending novels, and I didn't get error messages but the book wasn't uploaded.

Looks like this was something I had intended to do, had an issue with a sync service that wiped out a bunch of work, didn't have a bug report for it, and promptly forgot to re-add the feature. And then forgot that I didn't do it

This time there's a bug report, and I'm going to make it an option for people who may have relied (or preferred) the current behaviour.

Huh. I just tried reconverting epub-to-epub, and now everything works as it should. Very strange. There seems maybe that there is an issue with how the page count metadata is inserted into the book file, which is then fixed when the file is reconverted. So maybe not an issue with this driver, but with the page count plugin :-)

No, it is more likely there was a problem with the book.

Any changes to the metadata using calibre are only written into the database. The metadata in the books are not updated unless you tell it to: by a conversion, using the Modify ePub plugin or using Polish books. Or when calibre sends the book outside the library: during a save to disk or a send to device. So, the page count would not have been written to the book until you sent it to the device.

As the problem was fixed with a conversion, I suspect the cover wasn't defined in the OPF in a way that the extended driver could find and add the property the device needs. If it the driver can't do this, then even if the driver copies the cover, it won't be used. The conversion would have rewritten the OPF and fixed this.

Do you still have the original ePub file? I need the OPF file from the pre-conversion ePub to see why cover detection failed. Like davidfor said, it's probably that the original failed to properly define the cover image and conversion fixed the OPF definition.

I took a look at the OPF and the cover image wasn't properly defined. This is a failing of the publisher, or possibly of the retailer. Feel free to inform the retailer and/or the publisher, but if you get anything beyond a standard "thanks for your comments" form letter I'd be quite impressed
