That does not explain why they bought Ivona and are using that for TTS on the Fire tablets. And it is a much better speech engine. The Fire tablets have also taken up some of the slack in accessibility features, so it's not necessary to deliver those in a dedicated device.

I think it was just a matter of saving some manufacturing costs and being able to match or beat the price of the competition. There's a Paperwhite 'teardown' on YouTube and there are these blank regions on the circuit board where an audio chip would have been. None of the competition has audio in their ereaders, and until the Kobo Aura, nobody had more than 2GB.

That also allowed them to reduce the storage that was otherwise needed for audiobook storage.

So I'm not optimistic about a new eink device that adds any hardware features that would push the price back up. Maybe if and when liquavista screens are ready they can charge a little more for a color device.

I too have had every device except the DX (is that right?), and find myself going back and forth between my big Fire and my paperwhite. Without a doubt, I will get whatever the next iteration is. If it had the option of a memory card, I could carry my entire library with me. Don't know why I would want to, because if my device has too many books on it, I get nervous. Since the large Fire is so much heavier, I think the paperwhite is light. But lighter is always better! Maybe it will be under $50?

I don't. I'd actually like to see de-integration with Facebook and Twitter. The "share this!" nagging after I finish a book irritates me.

Well if they implemented it, would be nice to have an an option to turn on/off. That way people that might use it will, and those like yourself who don't want to can turn it off.

That's the point. It can't be turned off. The Kindle still wants to "share", even though I don't have a Facebook or a Twitter account filled out *and* WIFI is actually off.

Yep, good solution! But I'd go further and say 'have it off by default'.

Same here. No accounts and I still have Amazon's unwanted marketing pushed in my face. I HATE it. Keep the social c**p off of my ereader!

No offense but, that marketing thing with the "share with your friends you've finished the book" stuff only shows up on the very last page. That's after you've passed the ending of the book, any acknowledgement pages, "other books from author" stuff. To be honest I never even go that far, as soon as the book ends I leave it and I don't see the sharing thing. If you only want to read the book, stop pressing the page turn button when you're finished reading it.

I quite agree. It should be simple to make it so that if wifi is off, then don't offer integration options.
