John Fowles told the story in the form of a personal journal which made it all the more powerful and interesting. In the first half of the book, the story was told from the clerk (kidnapper's) perspective and then in the second half, it was told from the captive's perspective.

I've heard of it. It was used as part of the plot of an episode of Criminal Minds.

It was also a movie starring Terence Stamp and Samantha Eggar and directed by William Wyler, who interestingly turned down The Sound of Music to do it.

The author, Tami Hoag, earned her reputation with romance novels, but proved she could write a murder mystery / crime thriller with the best of them. Move over James Patterson and Michael Connelly. Hoag has the writing chops to stand up to a direct comparison with anyone. Evil villain? Check. Whodunit? Check. Memorable investigators? Double check (and not the two Minnesota detectives).

I didn't know she was a romance writer. That probably explains why I haven't liked the romance parts of some of her mystery/thrillers. I did enjoy the Kovac and Liska characters. According to stopyourekllingme.com, a new book in that series is due out soon.

I just read two books by Hurwitz--You're Next and The Crime Writer--and will definitely be coming back for more.

I believe Gillian Flynn's books qualify as thrillers - love them all. Also Patricia Highsmith's Ripley series!

A book that I've just finished and that could be put in the thriller/fantasy genre is The Secret of Crickley Hall by James Herbert. I would recommend it to late teens and adults only since there are some graphic descriptions.

Seconding this. Hunt for Red October is the best thriller I've read. The Cardinal of the Kremlin was also quite good. That said, I've found Tom Clancy's work that doesn't deal with US/USSR politics to be worse than his US/USSR ones. And he seems to have weakness for basing his plots on protagonist being idiots - a 50/50 split so far.

I've also liked what I've read of Michael Crichton. Jurassic Park and Timeline are oldies but goodies.

I'm reading a book called Rumours of War by Michael Snow. It's a quick read, and a pretty good page turner. It has a Clancy feel to it, but it's not as grand in scale as some of his books. I think it's his first novel. Some of his characters are quite interesting. I'm enjoying it.
