I couldn't find an option to turn this off, but name fields can be edited. I'd suggest just not using your real name if you wish to keep it private. I've also emailed Tor to suggest they fix the problem.
So what is the problem? I think it is a good thing so you can see who it is. i find it annoying then I can know people and have met them and still do not know that when I am responding to them.

It's the fact that they're doing it without notification that is troubling. Most forums require you to supply a real name for registration purposes, but publicizing personal information without warning and by default is not something most reputable sites do. I am sure it is simply an oversight in the site design, and hopefully they will correct it so that people will be able to make this decision for themselves. Although, as I mentioned, you can go back and edit the name field - but for that you need to know the issue is there, hence my post.

Thanks for the heads up wayrad.

I did register with Tor.com yesterday, but I haven't found any free ebooks. Am I looking in the wrong places?

No, I think you're you're looking at the wrong time. The email notice they sent out said:
Quote:
New giveaway e-books

More details next week--but yes, we plan to resume giving away selected e-books on Tor.com, at least one title per month. To download them you’ll need to not just visit Tor.com but register as a user; the downloads won’t be accessible until you do.
The previous downloads are no longer available. I don't believe new stuff has been posted yet. You should now be on their mailing list and get notified when something is there.

I believe the Baen site strongly recommends that you supply your real name in a form that will be displayed to the public. It's been a while since I registered there, so I've forgotten exactly how it's worded or what the display is. But perhaps whoever is setting up the TOR site is thinking of that.

I appreciate being able to have an online "handle," though I'm not especially paranoid about people learning my "true identity." (I've posted a couple of pieces of information in my sig that would make it obvious for anyone who cares to find out.) But I agree that if a site is going to make your personal information public, it should disclose that at registration.

Just to note, the free e-books Tor originally gave away ARE still up on the site. At least for the moment. They just took the links down.

But if you find the links somewhere else, such as in the old emails, or on a blog post that links to the actual files, you can still snag them.

At least at the moment. Last night someone mentioned still being able to download them, and I pointed out the files were still there on the server. Torie, funny person that she is, replied, "They have indeed been taken down from the server. The promotion is over, sorry folks!"

But I just checked at that blog post and the links still work.

Better snag them fast if you missed them. I have no idea how long it might take until Torie thinks to actually check the links and realize, gosh, these do still work.

Thank you for the link - snagged them all now!

Cheers,

BTW, I just heard from author Steven Brust that he thinks some of his books will be in the Baen ebook deal.

Just a reminder, this could be folks' last chance to snag those books. People are insisting to Torie that, no, the links really do still work, so sooner or later she'll get wise.

I did some limited exploring at TOR and found about a half dozen free downloads for short stories. http://www.tor.com/index.php?option=...t&view=stories

I like that it will also read them aloud for you.
