I think it was mainly for information. This was something put in by the author of the original driver. Showing previews makes sense as they do take space. And recommendations take space for the images. The driver supports deleting either of them using the device list.

Ahh, ok , if you can delete them from the device from within Calibre, that makes sense now, thanks.

On the Extended driver, is there any reason NOT to enable "Delete Files not in Manifest", "Replace Content Language Code", "Smarten Punctuation" and "Clean ePub Markup"?

You may not want to enable Delete Files not in Manifest if you have (or if you're concerned about having) a poorly-done ePub file where important files (like CSS) may be referenced in the HTML content but not in the manifest.

You may not want to enable Replace Content Language Code if you don't have hyphenation enabled and you don't have any problems related to language formatting (hyphenation, etc.), or if you don't have the correct language defined for every book in your calibre library.

You may not want to enable Smarten Punctuation if you don't like the fancy punctuation marks.

You may not want to enable Clean ePub Markup if you want to keep cruft that Microsoft applications insist on inserting, empty heading tags, self-closing paragraph tags, or Unicode replacement characters ().

How do I send a book with an updated cover to the Aura HD? As in, if I use Modify ePub to change the cover of a book in my Calibre library, and that book is already on the device with the old cover, how do I get the book with the new cover onto the device? I tried just using "Send to Device", but the device still shows the old cover, even after a reboot.

It seems you have to remove the book from your Kobo.
Then disconnect it from your computer.
Reconnect and send again.

I keep getting an error when I try to load a book.

Failed to parse 'Synthetic Men of Mars' by 'Burroughs, Edgar Rice' with error: 'Opening and ending tag mismatch: head line 2 and meta, line 4, column 8' (file: calibre_plugins.kobotouch_extended.container, line: 385)

Traceback (most recent call last):

File "site-packages/calibre/gui2/device.py", line 557, in _upload_books
File "calibre_plugins.kobotouch_extended.driver", line 264, in upload_books

Is this a book problem or a plugin problem?

I put the book here:

Or if you are like me you do this some other way. I usually use the Modify ePub plugin, but a conversion or Polish book will also do it. The advantage of doing that is I get the smart quotes when I read by some other method. And as the process isn't perfect, I can fix any errors.

THat should work. The resend of the book should remove the generated cover images and allow the device to regenerate them. The reboot should clear any cached images,

Could you check that the cover images are removed? After resending a book, look on the device in ".kobo/images". The file names are based in the full path of the book. I use the default save template, so I just for files with part of the author name. If they aren't there for the book, it should be OK. If they are still there, there is a problem in the main driver that I will need to look at.

No idea. But please read the first post to see how to report bugs. If it's only here I most likely will forget to take a look when I get a chance to look at bugs again.

Ok, I looked in the .kobo/images folder and found 3 files with the name of the book in question. All 3 had the extension ".parsed". So I copied them out, renamed the extension to .jpg and opened them. All 3 were of the old, original cover, in various sizes. There are no files in the .kobo/images folder related to the book in question that have the new cover. So it seems that simply using "Send to device" on a book with updated cover does not work, it looks like you have to delete the existing book first.

I am pretty klutzy aboutt this sort of thing, but when I change/replace covers, I delete the old book from the device, and then run the convert books dialogue on the book with its new cover. Then I upload the book to my device again.

Is there an option to mark books as read within calibre and syncing it over to the kobo? Where it should reflect in reading life? Just as holding on a book on the kobo and selecting mark as read? I had to do a software reset and now pressing through all those read books is a pain. I searched through the forums but didn't really find the means to do that. Although it seemed possible.

There is something in the works but not released yet. It also supports other very useful Kobo functions. The author is working on documentation for it.

As PeterT said, yes there is something in the works. But, at the moment it won't update reading life. Actually, marking a book as finished doesn't add it to the "Books Finished" in reading life. You have to go to the end of the book and finish it. It is possible that marking it as finished near the end will do this, but I haven't tested that. But, the percent complete is all books marked as finished by any means as a percentage of all the total books on the device.

I get the following error in Calibre when trying to send a particular book to my Aura HD:

Code:
calibre, version 0.9.33
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

Failed to parse '<book name>' by '<author>' with error: '<book name>_split_085.html' (file: calibre_plugins.kobotouch_extended.container, line: 339)

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages/calibre/gui2/device.py", line 85, in run
  File "site-packages/calibre/gui2/device.py", line 557, in _upload_books
  File "calibre_plugins.kobotouch_extended.driver", line 264, in upload_books
InvalidEPub: Failed to parse '<book name>' by '<author>' with error: '<book name>_split_085.html' (file: calibre_plugins.kobotouch_extended.container, line: 339)
If I extract the ePub, it seems there is no "split_085.html" file - the last one is named "split_084.html".

UPDATE: If I run the Modify ePub plugin, and select "Remove missing file entries from manifest", it then send to device just fine.
