I can read the book then enjoy the movie but I can't seem to watch the movie then enjoy the book.

I tend to read when I want to get tired which is quite often because I work night shifts, most of the time when I'm awake and have free time I'll either be watching movies, tv shows or playing video games truthfully I enjoy all of them depending on my mood.

If it is something we both enjoy I will watch the movie. If it isn't I read while she watches the movie. We are still together. One is staring at a lit screen and the other is watching a movie.

What do you do if she gets bored with the movie and she asks you to turn up the volume on your book?

I'm guessing it's because some much of the stuff on TV is tripe and you have only so many channels to choose from. With books, you always get to choose. If you want a quality read, you can choose a quality read. If you want pure entertainment, you can choose pure entertainment.

I've found TV much less disdainful since tuning into online streaming and library DVDs because of that. (For fun, I decided to hook up my TV to my apartment's cable connection and discovered that the landlord provides basic cable. Ten minutes later, I moved the TV away from the cable jack and back to the ADSL modem. There just wasn't a point to leaving it on cable.)

I have a TV, and a big one at that. The only thing it ever does is show DVD/Blu-Rays, and the front-end of my FLAC-playing ATOM computer-that-looks-like-a-Hifi-component mediaplayer.

To be honest, I can't even remember watching a complete program on TV. Even Discovery, National Geographic and related channels often get turned off because of the advertisments every 10 minutes.

There are very, very few things on TV that interest me. And the things that DO interest me, I'll buy on DVD/Blu-Ray. Some stuff I can't even get over here. There are two series I follow by watching the episode on Youtube (yeah, really), the day after release.

depends on which has a 'happy ending' at the finish.

Agree so much. This turning ones nose up at the mention of TV or going to the movies is just another form of snobbery to me. Next step is what you read THAT and not the classics.

I love a good story, sometimes it is best told as a movie, sometimes as a book. I have to say What I like to read in general I hate to read and vice versa.

I adore Star Trek, but would not read it. I love action movies, but the thought of reading say Jack Reacher books has me running the other way. Noe would i read The Hangover books but I loved the movies.

If it is spending time with my Husband most times it is tv or the movies, we are then interacting as we do both know how to hit the pause button, and do that a lot LOL. If it is a movie we go to dinner as well and talk about it.
When it comes to books, he is a reader BUT reads way way slower than me, so I have to shut up and not give spoilers. Game of Thrones is driving me nuts at the moment, he has only just started book 3 whilst I have finished them all.

I agree, the only exception was the hannibal books. I saw the first movie before I read the book and did not mind at all. I am in a huge hurry to read World War Z before it hits cinemas, I may have to put it after the Stephen King I am currently reading.

To some extent it depends on the movie and the book, but generally if my husband wants to watch a movie with me, I'd appreciate him wanting to share that experience with me and I'd probably read later.

The movie. I love movies. Add in the other circumstances, like the spouse thing, and definitely movie. I'd have to be in the middle of particularly enjoyable book to be unwilling to put it down for two hours.

By the way, the new Star Trek was very good. It's one of the few movies I've seen in the theater recently.

I also liked "Jack Reacher." Just saw it on DVD. I was prepared to not like it because of the ridiculous physical miscasting, but they did indeed put together an entertaining flick with a genuine Reacher-like feel.

Sorry but the choices offered don't work for me. When I was married and my wife asked if I'd rather go shopping at the mall or read a book I always picked shopping at the mall not because I wanted to go shopping at the mall but I was hoping to get laid. I would sit on a hard wooden bench in the mall and read my book while my wife shopped. And, no, it usually didn't work.
