If you want to get the history of the move to IR touchscreens, go poke around the Sony forums. I remember the first capacitative (like cellphones) reader they put out. People were up in arms over the loss of sharpness & contrast the capacitative layer created.

Kindle has apparently solved that problem with the Paperwhite, but that took a few years.

The Kindle Paperwhite uses capacitive touch. But you said even that its gap is barely tolerable for you? I'm not sure there's any ereader that uses resistive touch.

Capacitive touch for me just doesn't play nice with my skin, and you'd need special gloves to use the screen in cold weather and they're not cheap (nor that warm). While I'm ok with resistive touch, I much prefer the infrared system where it takes just the briefest of touches to trigger the page turn rather than using any pressure. In fact, on my Sony readers, you don't even have to actually touch the screen, just be slightly above it and you'll trigger the page turn or activate the button.

The Kobo infrared isn't as sensitive as the Sonys, but it's still much preferable to the other 2 choices for me.

Kobo uses same IR touch system as Sony and both are just as sensitive. Sony uses only swipes sideways or vertical to change pages. Kobo uses sideway swipes or short touch to change page. At first Kobo touch would almost instantly change page with a touch but would sometimes have double page turns. Present short delay before turning page prevents double page turns.

That's the first time anyone else has mentioned that "short delay" before turning pages, which makes the pages on my Sonys flip faster than on the Kobo Glo. But when I try to swipe on the Glo, it can take 4 tries to do it and it seems to need more of a deliberate slow even swipe. The touches work better but not doable if you're holding the reader in your left hand.

And then there's the times when I wait for the delay, finally swipe or touch a 2nd time, and I advance 2 pages.

Do you remember what firmware version did not have the delay? I'd like to give that one a try and see if it stops my page turns.

Ah... I remember my jetBook Lite where the page turns were instantaneous, at the push
of a button.

Luck;

I think all firmware versions have that delay. We just adapt to it by tapping while reading the last sentence on the page. Then it really throws us off on those rare occasions when it takes longer than expected.
