After a rather stressful day involving several hours of driving, I am now laying on a hotel bed, enjoying free WiFi, and going to watch an episode (or two) of NCIS. |

I'm enjoying air conditioning again. We lost power Friday night several hours before Ike hit but it came back on just a few minutes ago, much to my bewilderment. Most of Houston, I thought, was without electricity and expected to be so possibly for days. The stars, the gods, my crossed toes - some of those must have aligned. Hmmmm. Being cool is pretty cool.

The desk chair that I have used for 15 years finally gave up the ghost. I have spent a good part of this evening putting the replacement together. It is now finished and this is the first post while sitting in the new chair.

Hopefully everyone else in that area is ok too! I'm avoiding doing homework. Which in this case means reading some chapters on "critical thinking" and logically analyzing a few arguments. Then I'm supposed to write the strongest defense I can of "closed-minded thinking." I more or less understand why we have this assignment, given the reactions of my fellow classmates at our last class, but I can think of many more constructive things I could be doing with my time. Like writing the next manga page. (And I needed to do some research on the Japanese police system for that, and design some officer characters. And I've done that now. So hopefully I can get the next several pages done soon.) |

Just checked into a motel in Rehoboth Beach. Looking forward to 3 days of sun, surf, significant (who's always sunnier and surfier when she's at the beach), and avoiding Utopian rants! Gotta go make a rum runner. |

I'm puzzling over the movie title I just saw: Burn After Reading. A normal person would see that and think of something similar to the Mission Impossible tape that self-destructs after being played only this time it's the reader that is being instructed to burn the material after he's read it. And then there's me. I read the title and immediately imagined that anyone who read the thing (whatever it is) instantly burst into flames. So I'm puzzling over my head and how it works. A strange device that is. Don't go near it.

I just finished work on the base for a new litter box caddy. Well, alright, that sounds strange too. Anyway ... I'm going to bed early. | |

I'm struggling a bit right now with a thread over in the French forum. Something about President Chavez is an ebook reader voyeur. The technology in these things is really getting sexy, I guess.

I'm picking splinters out of my thumb from working on a couple of windows for my house. Got them all done except for the gluing up, the staining, and the ordering the glass. Also cut down five bags of weeds from the three foot strip of "garden" next to my drive and finished staining the new door in the dining room. All in all a productive weekend. |

Taking a break after slogging through this morning's "crises" (e.g. "Read More..." links show up for some faculty members, but not others, oh my!) Waaayyyy too tired today. Had trouble sleeping due to allergies. |

Editing the Burton translation of The Thousand Nights and A Night. It has over 1,400,000 words and nearly 5,500 footnotes. I may be some time, especially because I keep reading the stories and the salacious footnotes. |
