Actually; the tool I sent you was slow SLOW to run.... Try this Windows command instead (you need to run this from a command prompt with Admin level).

Code:
fsutil file createnew kobo_drive:\bigfile 1000000000
This will make a 1GB file called bigfile in the root directory of the Kobo.
Repeat as needed (with appropriate values) to fill up the Kobo (or as close to fill up as you want).

OK. I did the fill using the filldisk tool Peter sent me. It took 25 minutes, but it did fill the disk. I checked by attempting to load a book into main memory using calibre and got a disk full message. I also got a "could not communicate with device" error when calibre attempted to do its update of metadata etc.

I uploaded the book onto the sd card. It got there, but it is not seen by the Aura as being on device when I do a search, or look at the library in "books". It is on the SD card. I then tried to download a book that had been archived, from the device over WiFi. The book did not go the queue or download. I had hoped that when the Aura itself decided to place a book on the SD card it might go there. Nope.

It sure looks like some things with the Aura are just different than earlier readers. I guess we won't know how different until the two driver developers have them to play with (or Kobo tells us more)

EDIT: Removing the fill made the book on the SD card show in "Books", be findable through search. No covers on the home page (which was the initial concern that started off this process).

The reason it probably failed to do anything the first time is probably because the disk was too full to even update the database. I would be interested to see if a book downloaded from Kobo onto the SD card shows up properly.

Well, that is what I tried to do when I attempted to take a book that was archived to download onto the device. It would not queue and it did not download.

Maybe rather than totally filling the disk, leave a small bit, a 100k or so free....

Not today, my friend, not today. I have spent so much time over this long weekend messing with various device problems, that i had no time to read. I intend to fix that today.

I agree with you fully on that. I suppose it's why I've stopped worrying about the minutiae of screen layouts etc, and instead am just trying to read!

I left 10MB free when I did my test with the Glo. I figured that would be enough to allow the database to be updated.

I'm also going to have a think about the database errors taming saw. They will have been due to lack of space, so it should be possible to avoid them. A check that there is space enough for another copy of the database would probably do it.

Transferring the book as a standard epub works okay for me.

I am pretty clueless about this sort of thing, but is it possible to tell from the file Kobo puts on the SD card what exactly is triggered (or under what conditions) when a person fills the main memory to whatever Kobo expects/needs in terms of space for processing and things spillover onto the card?

Calibre generates this exact error with around 20% of my books on my Aura as well as on my Mini. Most of them are epubs bought at other shops, B&N or Blackwell, some are amazon converted mobis, while some are free epubs.

In most of the case re-converting them to epub works, but not always.

edited to say : I don't use an SD card, all my books (110) are on the device itself.

Probably not directly. My 10MB choice was to leave space to write the database if needed. If it hadn't worked, I would have tried reducing it. Or increasing it if the database had problems. But, I wouldn't be surprised if they allowed a 50MB buffer.

I just noticed a curious issue. I started re-reading Cryptonomicon, which is heavy on the illustrations, and I noticed that all the illustrations were offset to the left instead of centered. I checked a couple of other books, and they had it too. I re-transferred with the orioginal Calibre drivers, and the illustrations were centered like they should. Re-transferred again with the extended driver, and they were offset to the left.

Not a huge problem, but ... Known issue?
