Talk about instant gratification.
Sounds like he read it immediately, and pounced. And well he should: it's timely, topical, and exactly the sort of thing the Bulletin would look for. I'll be surprised if more than a few other authors haven't thought about trying to produce ebooks, and the responses should prove interesting.

Let us know when it will appear, and if possible, make an electronic copy available from your site.

In that case, I shall channel Emily Littella and say: never mind!

He wants it to be right. Previous volumes have required proofreading and correction to get a decent electronic copy to start from. And once he has that, conversion is required (assisted by various folks here) to get them into the variety of formats offered.

And he has a wife and kids, a book under contract to write, and various other matters to attend to. It's not like posting _The Infinite Sea_ is the only thing he has to do.

Patience.

That is good news. Do you have a link to the article or is it not up yet?

It's not up yet, and likely won't be. The Bulletin is a print publication.

See http://www.sfwa.org/Bulletin/

I'm hoping Jeff can make an electronic copy available from his site.

Hi guys. Um, yeah. It's going to be published in the Bulletin, which is a quarterly print publication for SF writers. Eventually, I'm sure I'll be able to post it online, but that won't be for a while. I haven't seen the actual contract yet, but I'm pretty sure it's exclusive for a period of time. Sorry about that.

Not much in it you don't already know, though. It talks about prepping the original manuscript file, and how to get it ready for conversion. This is the most time-consuming part. Then about the actual conversion, at least to the most popular formats. Then, finally, about the presence of online communities where people willingly help you get your book into ebook formats.

BTW, I've noticed that downloads of Strange Attractors, while respectable, are lagging well behind Neptune Crossing. C'mon, guys--we can't have a downward spiral here! Drink up! It's on the house!

Well, I did download this ebook, looking forward to the 3rd. I threw something into the tip jar for you too.

It will be interesting to see how many Bulletin readers pop up here, citing the article, and asking for assistance.

Give folks time to read the first one.

(And there will doubtless be a few who read the first, say "Nah, not my thing." and pass on the others, but meanwhile, I'd say the effort has been well worth the while.)

Shh! Not supposed to say that! Even if it's true!

I'm so far behind in my reading, it's ridiculous. I've been reading Stross's Accelerando for some time, and have almost finished it. (Here on my retreat, I have both the paperback and my PDA with the free download on it. Been finding I prefer using the PDA much of the time, such as while eating breakfast. No pages to hold open.)

Perhaps. But meanwhile, they'll probably tell SF reading friends, who will like it. And if they don't like the Chaos Chronicles, they may still be inspired to check out other things you've written.

I view the offer the same way I view the Baen Free Library: it isn't promoting books, so much as promoting the author. People who weren't previously aware of Jeffrey Carver as an SF author now are.

Join the large club. The nice thing about ebooks is that you don't need to call the paramedics if my ebook To Be Read stack topples over one me. The hardcovers are another matter.

And I have Acellerando in hardcover and electronic format. and am reading it.

Charlie participates here, incidentally, as CStross.
