Yes; Homeland Security, the CIA, the NSA, the FBI, and your boss who's an expert hacker may indeed be reading the PMs members share here at MobileRead; but here's one group that isn't reading them: the Moderation Team. There are only 3 ways that a moderator can and/or will read your PMs: (1) The PM is addressed to the moderator, either directly or via closed copy; (2) the PM has been forwarded to the moderator by the recipient; or (3) the PM has been reported to the Moderation Team by the recipient. Otherwise, whenever people communicate via PM, we have no idea what's being said. We don't snoop, nor do we even have the capability to snoop on people's private conversations. If people are receiving spam PMs and report them, we act. If people are receiving harassing or threatening PMs and report them, we act. Otherwise, Private Messages are just that: PRIVATE.

So might venting about abortion;pro or con, standardized testing in schools, the quality of meat being sold by mega-markets, genetically modified foods, medical treatment for the indigent, lay-offs by Big Business, sweat-shop worker deaths in Third World Countries, and scores of other subjects.

Perhaps you might like to make up a list of just what you feel it's 'safe' for us vent or rant about, as well as which side of the issue you might prefer to see being pilloried. That would make us all fell less threatened when we make our posts. As on poster said; " I thought as long as we stayed away from politics and religion, and of course don't get inappropriate, we could vent and rant at pretty much anything. ??? (Serious question. I don't want to get my hand slapped, lol!) " Obviously there are people already feeling threatened...

... and that simply should NOT be happening. Something is very wrong.

Well can I humbly request that in the future we only see moderator posts such as yours once the discussion has actually degraded into a heated discussion (and I'm not sure what is wrong with that provided it is kept within the bounds of the posting guidelines) and not "just in case"? We are all grown-ups here.

PMs are private (although technically we could access them). We don't have time to read every PM, and frankly couldn't care less what people are PMing each other.

However, since we don't want users harassed, insulted, or stalked in PMs, it is possible to "report" a PM. When that is done we get a copy of the PM that was reported. That is the only time we ever look at a PM.

If you don't trust the integrity of those that run and moderate the forum there is nothing stopping you from no longer being a member here. However, I have the utmost respect for my fellow team members and their honesty, integrity and intentions.

This kind of pointless discussion is exactly why the Posting Guidelines have item 12 which says, in part, "discussions or questions about the actions of the Moderating Team are not permitted on open forum. Moderation actions are confidential between the team and the member in question. If you have any questions about an action, please address them to the team or other member by Private Message."

Just a small clarification: Alex certainly could. Possibly one or two other super-editors (I don't know). Most of the moderating team certainly can't.
