No Bookshelves with Calibre 9.28 and Kobo Glo 2.5.1 ?

Dear friends,

I just bought a Kobo Glo and hoped there is an easy to transfer the series information along with the books from Calibre to the Kobo Glo.

Unfortunately no bookshelves are created based on the series metadata with Calibre. I am using these settings along with Calibre 9.28 and the Kobo Glo firm ware 2.5.1:

Read metadata from files on device
Use sub directories

Save template:
{author_sort}/{series} {series_index:0>3s} {title} - {author_sort}

Create Bookshelves
Show Previews
Set Series Information

Am I understanding the concept of bookshelves correctly as "series" ? Am I missing some settings?

Any help is welcome!

Best regards

There is a sticked thread over in the Kobo forum with full instructions. Do remember you have to disconnect the Kobo and reattach it in order form the series info to be updated in the database

Thank you for answering.

Yes, I disconnected and reattached the Kobo. But after disconnecting again still no bookshelves were created on the Kobo Glo.

Shelves should be creted on the initial attachment. Have you red all of the instructions on shelves? Is Metadata management set to automatic?

Thanks a lot - your Quick Guide is a great idea !!!

Two things did the job:

1. Adding "series, tags" to the "tags type column for automatic management" of the Kobo Touch device interface plugin => now I see both series and tags as defined in Calibre.

2. Using the "metadata plugboard" information as described in your Quick Guide:

{series}{series_index:0>2s| - | - }{title}

=> now I see the series number within the title

One additional question: Is there a way to configure the plugboard in such a way that the series is within the book shelve sorted in ascending (instead of descending) number?

Glad you sorted the rest out. Shelves on the device can be sorted in different ways. Press the "by xxx" at the top left of the shelf page and to see the list of possibilities. Sorting by title should do what you want.

Sort By Author & Series

I'm having an issue sorting bookshelves such that any authors series show up in chronological order. Either my metadata and metadata plugboard are off, or there is a bug in the Kobo 2.5.1 firmware, or I'm lost

I have my "Historical Fiction" book shelf set to sort by Author. Within this shelf I have a lot of series, as well as stand alone books by the same series author. But the Kobo Aura is displaying such that books in a series are "broken up" by other books from the same author, such that they are displayed first by author, then by title, instead of keeping a series together.

So, for example, I have the the "Saxon Chronicles" series by Bernard Cornwell (consists of 6 books, all on my Kobo), as well as other books by Bernard Cornwell, both stand alones and series. My metadata plugboard for the KoboTouchExtended plugin is set up as {series}{series_index:0>2s| - | - }{title}, with the destination field set to Title. Here's how it displays in my Historical Fiction book shelf on the Kobo Aura:

Burning Land
The Saxon Chronicles - 5
Bernard Cornwell

A Crowning Mercy
Bernard Cornwell

Death of Kings
The Saxon Chronicles - 6
Bernard Cornwell

Enemy of God
Warlord Chronicles - 2
Bernard Cornwell

Excalibur
Warlord Chronicles - 3
Bernard Cornwell

Heretic
Grail Quest - 3
Bernard Cornwell

The Last Kingdom
The Saxon Chronicles - 1
Bernard Cornwell

Lords of the North
The Saxon Chronicles - 3
Bernard Cornwell

The Pale Horseman
The Saxon Chronicles - 2
Bernard Cornwell

Stonehenge
Bernard Cornwell

Sword Song
The Saxon Chronicles - 4
Bernard Cornwell

Not sure if this will be much help but that looks like the complaint for the last while about Kobo removing the series sort in one of the firmware updates.

Regards,
David

PS: My personal answer was to edit my books in Sigil and add the series information to the title of the book. This had been my standard practice for a while.

That almost looks like the plugboard is not working... If it was I would have expected the title to be The Saxon Chronicles - 05 - Burning Land, and in fact I would expect the sort by title to work as expected, and in effect sort by the series name / sequence in series since those are now at the start of the title.

Now that you say that, it made me remember that I have the same construct for my Kindle plugboard & it works correctly on that device - The Saxon Chronicles - 05 - Burning Land. Looks like the plugboard for Kobo device isn't working correctly....

I'm not at all familiar with Sigil - is this a tool more geared toward the savvy HTML coders out there??

It's an open source ePub editor. It can be used to clean crap out of ePub files (like fixed margins) that Calibre doesn't always touch.
