Fotawn: It was funny when that sticky sweaty reporter tried to pick up the hippie chick. Even funnier was when he kept growning, and reached down and actually did pick her up. Almost liek a scene from a movie written by a male.

Union Boss: I wonder when he will stop growing. Lucky that hippie chick was able to slip between his expanding cells and get away. He just keeps expanding.

Wait till one of 'em says yes... Hey, I was only poking fun at the "hero gets the girl" bit that we're all so familiar with... a little back-handed slap at rote adventure fare. (Besides, the girl asked him if he was dating anyone first! Sheesh!)

I suppose I'm also reacting partially to the segment I read of Encephalopath, which seemed to have much the same sort of tendency. Sorry if I've over-generalized.

Well, I admit a few of my stories include guys trying to hook up with girls they've just met. You won't find that in every novel I've written. But let's face it, it happens all the time, and acting like guys don't try to pick up girls would be a real example of science fiction!

I've also depicted guys and girls in existing relationships, no relationships, and rekindling old relationships. I've covered marriage and divorce, but I haven't done gay/lesbian yet. And oh, yeah... so far no sex with farm animals or "orgasmatrons."

IOW, I'm trying to be real (insert street-scene hands-crossed homey pose here), but I haven't gone too crazy yet. But if someone told me it might help my books' popularity...

Oddly enough, this hasn't been my perception of reality. I have mostly male friends, and very few of them have ever tried to "pick me up" in this sense. I'm not saying it's never happened, just that it's not my perception of everyday life. So perhaps it is my perception of reality that is skewed... but it leads to me finding these scenes jarringly unrealistic.

It may just be the differences in location and culture, because around this area (Washington DC), you see it all the time. Not as heavily as you'll see it on American TV, of course, and PC is making the appropriate venues harder and harder to find. But I see it regularly... and I don't even hang out in the "cool" places anymore, as I'm considered too old for 'em!

(And for the record: I've known lots of girls over the years, and none of 'em ever tried to pick me up, either.)

Perhaps it's judgmental of me, but I've always considered the people who hang around in venues to pick up members of the compatable gender to be... well... shallow. I wonder if that's really how most people meet, or just the most visible or talked about way?

Most visible, for sure. There's also an element of excitement inherent in "meeting a stranger" that makes it a popular piece of lore. And I'd believe that a lot of people do hook up that way.

OTOH, I'd also bet that most people are introduced to new people by friends or acquaintances, or meet at get-togethers (like parties) arranged by friends or acquaintances. (Disclosure: I met my wife at a bar, where we'd been invited separately to come and meet up with mutual friends.)

I've never had preconceptions about "bar-flies," other than the fact that they obviously had a healthy measure of self-confidence and positive self-image to try to hook up with strangers at a bar or similar venue. Besides, it takes 2 to tango, and it takes all kinds to make a world. (Translation: If I'd been that confident when I was a kid, I'd've been doing it, too!)
