I agree I'm awfully tempted, it looks a bit better than the paperwhite, and I like the increased resolution and more even light. But I too love the ecosystem Amazon has, the lending Library, the cheaper book deals. I would Imagine Paperwhite 2.0 will eventually arrive and perhaps the aura will serve a greater purpose and make Amazon up their game with a better lighting sysytem, higher resolution and a slightly bigger screen, until then I can read on my paperwhite.

I won't use the internal storage for files, only the SD card will contain ebooks. I just need to be able to insert the SD card with the files on it and have the device see them all with no problems. Will that work?

If it's like all other Kobos, then yes.... books on an SD card will be seen and usable.

Current Kobo readers can set the number of pages between refreshes from 1 to 99, the Aura should be the same.

I know exactly what you're talking about, because I root every phone and every tablet I have, so I can do things with it that I otherwise could not.

That is true for an e-reader also, of course, but for me, it's a different sort of device; in essence, it is a replacement for a paper book, with the some added niceties, such as being lighter, thinner and smaller, and of course the things that can never be done with a book, such as changing fonts, sizes, margins, and spacing. If I can do that, and be able to put 5 books onto the device, I'm quite happy. (I would never be able to carry five books of the size I regularly read with me everywhere... so let alone my entire library.)

I think many people think like this with regard to e-readers. It's used to read an electronic book in a comparable way to reading a paper book, with the mentioned added conveniences, and anything else is just cream on top.

That's nice: 10 would be a good refresh cycle on the Paperwhite. It's these kinds of features that puzzle me. The Paperwhite can already set the refresh rate, but can only set it to 1 and 6. Why not put a textbox there, allowing you to put in a number between 1 and 99?

Being 240 grams, it is 30 grams heavier. Adding a case, which needs to be bigger by necessity, it'll add some more weight. Some people may not like that. However, it did turn out lighter than I would have thought. I wonder if I'd appreciate a 6.8 inch reader. 6 inch works for me; as my eyesight is poor, I hold the device close. I actually would need to use the Kobo to determine if I'd like a reader bigger than 6 inch. (I don't like smaller onces. I've tried it with a 5 inch phone already.)

It can be set from 1-6 using the settings menu, or up to 99 by editing the config file from a PC.

I assume you need to jailbreak the PW for that? If so, not gonna happen. I'm not going to jailbreak a reader for such a very small extra feature.

No need to jailbreak the Kobo to do some of this stuff. Fonts can be added; the refresh rate edited; even some of the linkages to tracking removed.

But also, it is easy to do items like enable telnet access, and also people have done a lot of adding tweaks into the device through plugins that have been developed.

Nope, editing that file doesn't need a jailbreak (at least not on my DX).

I think the file you want (in Windows speak) is .kobo\Kobo\Kobo Reader.conf in internal memory of the Kobo.

Edit with a simple text editor. Find the [Reading] section. The first item is something like:
Code:
numPartialUpdatePageTurns=6
Just change the 6 to be what you prefer, in the range 1-99 according to Geoff. Just be aware that ghosting will get worse the higher you set it.

Pre-ordering is simply not an option, I have to try that device for myself.

I hope that imbecile requirement to activate a new reader (or the one reset to factory settings) by connecting it to a machine running Kobo Desktop is gone. The Touch was perfectly functional as a standalone and self-contained appliance.

Well I never needed to connect my Glo to a PC to set it up, so the Aura should be similar
