If you're interested in it as Comic/Manga reader, or for PDFs it's worth watching this review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZHoAquQ1jw especially the portion starting about 11:30.

The whole review is worth a watch.

Would either of you have the link to the preorder page? I didn't find anything on the product page (not that I'll be ordering one immediately >_> )

After watching the review of Kobo Aura HD, I am really glad that finally an e-reader satisfying me is coming to the market. Nice job, Kobo.

Glo is a little short when reading manga or comics.

Does anybody know if the Aura supports PDF overflow to make PDF easier to read?

The tech specs states:
eBooks: EPUB, PDF, and MOBI

Is Mobi support back? Because Mobi support was absent from the Glo.

I wonder how Amazon will respond? Will they revive the Kindle DX line?

-----------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately, I bought the Glo about 1 month ago, so I don't know if I will get the Kobo Aura HD or not.

I was planning to wait at least 5 years for a sub $200 colour ereader to be produced.
I had the Kobo Touch which supposedly supported MOBI. Yeah right, their mobi rendering was just like a text file in Windows--absolutely no formatting, paragraphs ran together, ugly as sin and difficult to read. Meh! And the Touch was so buggy that I returned it. Kobo does have excellent CS, but their programming team could never get the Touch sorted out. And the thing I hated most about the Touch was their rendering for kePub books (from the Kobo store) were pretty good but side loaded ePubs were rendered differently and not very well.

Actually, I just went to Kobo's main "eReaders" page and the there's the Preorder button front and center. Maybe I just swung by before they had it up

ETA: haha, I am super tempted to dive in on one of these, but it really should wait until I have a vehicle sorted out. It's not like I could have it in my hot little hands before then, anyway

"Line spacing and margin don't work on side-loaded content."

So. Why not? The Kindle can set margins (at least, left and right) and do line spacing on side loaded content. For some fonts, I'd like a line space of 1, for other fonts It'd prefer 2.

Not being able to set line spacing already rules out this reader for me, as I'm not at all sure that I'm happy with the linespacing Kobo will choose for my side-loaded books.

I would question that comment in the review. The current readers are all capable of doing that on >90% of sideloaded conten, so I can't imagine the Aura will be any different. Initially there were some problems with epubs that had them hard coded (probably not the right term, but the right idea) that Kobo wasn't overriding (would have been that way in the initial Glo they would have tested), but newer firmware will override it most (not quite all) epubs currently.

Because my PRS-950 choked on page turns at my last reading, I actually have an excuse to buy the Aura.

The question is whether a dedicated e-reader like this one can be trusted to turn pages reliably and dynamically in the middle of a performance. A second or two's delay is all right, but choking for four seconds or more is definitely not.

I'd much rather have the Aura than a middling tablet, so I'm hoping it will do what I require. Either way, I have to buy a larger-form device rather soon and I can't delay for longer than a month.

Yes of course; if a publisher/calibre/whomever puts a <br /><br /> at the end of every line to create double spacing, instead of using proper CSS for that, then it'd be quite hard, maybe even impossible, to make the spacing smaller. Kobo could remove or ignore all <br /><br /> occurences and apply their own CSS in firmware for example. However, that would remove the double break at places where they are needed too.

(OK, you don't "need" them per se, as you can always use CSS, but not everybody marks up its eBooks as correctly as should be, and Calibre is not really good in creating clean code. It works very well, but it's not very clean.)

There are some new videos here that might answer your questions:

I'm a concerned about Kobo's privacy policy.
Quote:
Kobo boss Michael Serbinis:

So we collect data to enable you to have an experience over multiple devices. Capture your page turns, the page that you're on and that gives us other information like how fast you're reading. It tells us whether you bought a book and you'll loved it because you've finished it all in one sitting in a few hours. And that allows us to give much better recommendations what you might next from the same author or whether we should recommend a different author or genre for you.

(from 1:15+)

At first that sounds half-innocent but it's none of their business what I read, how long I read and so on.

So is Kobo spying upon the user? Can I disable these privacy violations?

I'd really like to know how the Aura works and looks if you disable Wifi entirely. It seems that you have the Kobo store, Kobo ads and this Sync button right at the Aura home screen.

You can disable all this stuff with your Sony Reader if you choose "Another Country" in the settings menue.

I'd like to know if that's possible with the Aura, too. Because I don't want this.
