Newspapers for Glo (screenshots?)
Hey all:
I'm thinking of getting an e-reader, probably a Kobo Glo, mostly for the newspaper subscriptions service (I'm a news junkie, and I've recently moved to a small town.) Before I shell out $130 for a reader though, I'd like to know how it reads. I've seen lots of screenshots and demos with books, but the ones at the store never seem to have any newspapers loaded - so I'm pretty much flying blind. How's the navigation on them? Do they have all of the newspaper content (including the wire service files, crosswords, comics, etc?) How easy is it to look up back issues? Can you search multiple issues at once (if, say, you're looking for an article) or do you need to remember which day the article was out? Basically, do you all enjoy the subscription service? Thanks! T. |

As far as I remember you only get the articles. No crosswords, no comics.
Don't think you can search entire publications (multiple dates). All your newspapers, magazines, and journals are categorized together, and you can sort by publication or by date. The reading experience itself is good. They used to have nagging issues with late or missed delivery (they extended your subscription for a few days on a couple of occasions to make up for it). Not sure if this is solved now. I stopped newspaper subscription a few months back, so some of the information I've provided may be outdated. Last edited by kobokobe; 04-09-2013 at 04:19 PM. |

Hi, welcome to Mobile Reads, I had a subscription briefly last year on my Kobo Vox, and have been wondering what one would look like on my Glo. So I got the two week free trial to the Toronto Star and downloaded today's copy to see. I don't think this will do what you want. First, there's no way that I can see to access back issues, either in whole or part. I also can't find anyway to search within an issue, or in multiple issues. Finally, since you asked specifically, I looked for comics and classifieds, and could not find either. I attached some screen shots, it appears that it gives a list of sections, then a list of articles within that section
Picture 1 - List of sections Picture 2 - List of articles Picture 3 - Article itself From the list of articles, one can go to previous or next section, from the article itself one can go to previous or next article, or back to the articles section. Basically, like kobokobe mentioned, you just get articles, nothing more. I think from what you've said you'd be much better served with an android tablet such as the Nexus 7 or Kobo Arc. There are apps that give you full colour, exact page reproductions of newspapers. (Globe and Mail here in Canada has a good one, and I've heard good things about Zinio) |

Wouldn't you be better off seeing if samples of the news sources you're interested in are available? You could likely find apps to read them with and see what you'd get in advance. For instance, Calibre has a built in reader app.

Thanks all! Very helpful indeed (and a bit disappointing; but that's a function of the answers, not the answerers.)
Technisol: I've been to the websites for a few of the papers I'm interested in (Globe, Star, Guardian...) and none of them have any real details about the e-read service, unfortunately. |

Calibre has a news fetcher built in - I quite often get some magazines that way (e.g. Mother Jones, Economist). It will cost you nothing to try out and read on the built in reader.
