Windows Indexing Service and Calibre Performance

Hi,
I whish to switch off the Indexing on the calibre dedicated partition for power saving issues.

Will the performance drop or is the FileSystem indexing only used by windows search engine ?

I would have thought that if anything performance will improve as you will be removing any disk I/O associated with the indexing service.

I believe the indexing service runs at a low priority so it should not interfere if you are doing something.

The relevant question is different: does the indexing service speed up the file system operations speeding up calibre ? Is it used in any way by calibre ?

All the indexing service does is to build a database of the CONTENTS of file types that it understands so that the Desktop search tool can use it to find files that contain stuff the user searches for.

Seeing it does not understand ePubs, mobi or other ebook formats, and neither does calibre search for content within ebooks, why would you expect calibre to use it

No. Calibre does not use any OS-based full-text indexing, which is what windows indexing service provides.

Getting rid of it probably won't save any power - unless you have something that creates, changes and deletes files at a very high rate, or if you're indexing temporary file directories etc. Nor will it change performance unless you've bumped its priority higher than 4.

You will lose the search functionality in Windows Explorer and probably in the Start menu.

Peter T - many iFilters are written by 3rd parties rather than MS. I suspect the reason there aren't any for the popular ebook formats is because they're mainly used for fiction and there's not much demand to content search fiction.

IFilters are available for CHM and DjVu and PDF (there's too many of those). Now that Foxit charges for its PDF iFilter it could do itself a favour by bundling epub and mobi iFilters into the product at the same price.

I made a deeper research on google.

Calibre and similar programs don't get advantages shutting down the indexing service.

Since the day I have turned it of on external hard drives now they spin down correctly.
