				New Basic Kindle arrived today

Just received my basic Kindle today. I love that I can read outside, but I didn't realize in the house, in the evening I would need an external light.

Now I realize the difference between it and the Paperwhite. How many here use the frontlight feature and what do you think of it? Amy Last edited by gal_amy; 04-07-2013 at 05:55 PM. |

It's a frontlight, and I love it. I won't buy another eink reader that doesn't have an integrated light.

I LOVE it! I wouldn't be without a lighted kindle now. I do a lot of reading in low light and also in the dark in bed so it's the perfect reader for me.

I love the light, too. I hope the next generation has more storage.

I have my Paperwhite set on a brightness level that works for me day and night. I enjoyed my older Kindles but only because the Paperwhite didn't exist yet.

Get the lighted one. I am fine with and without. The lighted one is easier to read for sure.

I agree. I can't imagine reading on a non- lit reader any more. Even just a little bit of light makes a huge difference.

I wouldn't get an e-reader without front-lighting technology at this stage; not only do I use it in the dark, but I even use it in well-lit situations to make the screen appear just that little bit whiter. The light, in my personal opinion, is an absolutely essential feature - now if only it also came with expandable storage!

I love it for low light reading, usually at about 3/4 brightness, though I don't like to read in the dark with the Paperwhite's screen as the only light source. I also really like it when reading during the day as I turn it up just enough that the text and whiteness on the page "pop" but not enough that it looks like it is lit.

I loved my Nook Simple Touch but just bought the Paperwhite 2 weeks ago. I can't imagine ever going back! |

All the PWs I had sucked. I'll never buy another eInk reader with ANY kind of additional layer that sits on top of the eInk screen. I prefer an iPhone or iPad for low light reading. IMO, eInk screens were never designed for nor intended for low light reading, and any attempt to modify them for that is going to result in a diminished quality of reading. What we need is another type of screen that can be lighted without degradation yet miserly when it comes to power consumption. Something other than an LCD or eInk. I know of nothing yet that has been invented and/or marketed that can achieve this. I doubt we will ever see an eInk that looks anywhere near as good in artificial, low light as it does in daylight.

I would never go back to a unlit eReader or lower resolution screen. That fact I can use custom fonts makes the PW perfect for me. My old readers are just collecting dust.

I LOVE the paperwhite. Formerly I was using a Verso Arc booklight at night (on my Kobo Touch) - which I thought was fabulous at the time. Just for giggles, I went back to the booklight the other night, just to see what that was like. Well! I have been spoiled now; there can be no comparison.
