I understand what you are saying about your job. There are ways of balancing your desire to do something that makes a difference and work for a company. You simply need to find a company that is doing work in areas you think are important. I don't know what type of research you are doing so it is hard for me to provide anything concrete.

All I know is I ended up working in an area I never thought I would have, and would have flat our rejected coming out of college, and feel like what I am doing is making a difference and is important. You don't know until you look around and think outside the box a bit.
Right now I do research for the Belgian Road Safety Institute. Everything I do has one major goal: reduce the number of accidents on Belgian roads. It's a job with a social engagement. I don't want to do marketresearch, where the goal of everything you do is making sure the company that hired you is making more money. (Although I've been on an interview with a marketresearch company, I'm glad they didn't hire me!).

One last glass of water before going out for lunch.

Are their companies who are developing goods that would benefit people that need researchers?

There are many comapnies that provide a public good and make a profit. Part of it is looking for a company or two that you like what they do and then look for jobs there.

A very worth-while job. The success of the road safety improvements over the past 40-odd years is astonishing and often overlooked.

In the UK it's made roads well over ten times safer (per vehicle-mile).

I think I shall go back to iced water again when my current supply runs out.

Another cappuccino. Lots to do and too much drama at work ...

*ranting mode on*

Our boss has more or less said that she will leave, no matter what the conditions are. She says there's no way she can keep working with the big boss, because last week she had to listen to her yelling to her and insulting her, every day. She hopes to stay one more month to finish some things, but past experiences has learned us that this probably won't happen. It'll probably be: give me your car keys, the taxi is waiting outside. And then they'll change the building's entry code so she can't get in. Everyone is completely shocked at what's happening.

This all happened last Friday, and the big boss just told her that she would have to wait another week for her final answer because she's going on holiday. So the big boss is skiing merrily somewhere while our boss is taking pain medication every day because of the migraine she gets from all the emotional stress.
I'm disgusted. That's no way to treat people.

*ranting mode off*

In Tasjkent after 23 hours of travel. Customs in Uzbekistan took a lot of time, even though I had my visa, filled out two forms extensively(....wether I had an electronic communication....filled out yes; my phone)and remained friendly even when lots of Uzbek sneaked past me to go first....

After a short rest and a breakfast of green tea, egg, flat bread and a blini ( small pancake) filled with goat cheese, I trapsed through Tasjkent the whole day; saw the sights, visited the Chorsu, a huge market and asked about the provenance of certain cheeses by pointing at the different animals in my "point-it" book. Nice people, but poverty in the alleys, behind the wide Soviet avenues and huge buildings.

And....21 degrees, sunny, short sleeves.

In my cup: nescafé.
In my hand: bananas and bread.*

Iridal,

I would start looking. Now. Your time on this planet is short, no reason to spend it in such a hostile environment.

I'd also start bringing a pocket sized tape recorder to work. That sounds like a hostile work environment to me!

I'm looking. If I change jobs, I want to find something closer to home, and it's not going to be easy. But I'm definitely looking

Sounds great, and as far away from the shitty long weekend I'm going to have working as can be. Have a great time, keep posting updates, and stay safe.

Tell you what, have a long weekend on me, then start thinking about it again next week. Sounds like you need a rest from it .

Coffee all gone. Just about to take a bunch of screaming 11 year olds out for a Birthday dinner. Wish me luck.

Good luck, Iridal. This whole thing sounds frankly horrible, and very probably actionable. But first you need to survive. And definitely start actively looking for a new job.

Working on a whitepaper for a friend. Not much $$, but maybe it will lead to something more. I told him he could have this one at an "introductory bargain price", but any future work he'd have to pay my going rate. I figure if nothing else, I'll learn a LOT about HIPAA doing this.

In my cup: Peet's Holiday Breakfast Blend.

I really want to try out this year's Anniversary Breakfast Blend, but it will have to wait until I have real work. It certainly sounds different from last year's! Which could be good, could be bad.
