Just got some really bad news this morning, work-related. My boss will probably get fired and THE boss thinks all us researchers are lazy as hell and not working scientifically ... Of course she doesn't have a clue what we do and how time consuming research is ... If they command us to work with even tighter deadlines, I'm out of here. There's no way I'm going to work 42 hours every week, I have a life outside of work.

There's also good news, we are finalizing our design. Our architect has proposed to scrap the toilet on the ground floor, so we can expand our kitchen a lot (an extra 2 meters!). But then we'd only have one toilet, on the first floor. It's a separate room, but even so I'm a bit worried. Any families of 4 here who have only 1 toilet to share?

Coffee is all gone by now, time to get to work. It's going to busy this week, despite what the boss seems to think ...

Sorry to hear about the big boss - one person can make such a difference as to whether work is tolerable/enjoyable. I have left a job for just that reason.

Regarding the toilet situation, as a family of 5, I would absolutely not consider having only one toilet. We have three, and for the last couple of months we were without one of them while we waited for a new suite to be delivered. Even with two toilets there have been many occasions when there has been fighting for the bathroom (mind you, I do have three girls

). I just can't see only one being enough for a family of four. You might get away with it while the kids were very young, but not if this house is a long-term proposition. The extra space in the kitchen does sound attractive though.

I'm considering doing just the same (leaving my job because of that one person). If my boss leaves, we would have to work directly underneath her ... I just won't do it, not even if they triple my wages.

I've been hearing very conflicting stories from family and friends. My BF had only one toilet when he still lived at home. He had a teenage brother. He says it was no problem. I've always had two toilets (family of 6) at home, and there have been numerous times when the toilet downstairs was occupied when I had to go. I think it's just a matter of habit really. I mean, 80 years ago people had a toilet outside with a hole in a piece of wood, and they did fine

Maybe we'll make a connection for a toilet underneath the stairs just so we can install a second one if it is really necessary.
The kitchen would be absolutely divine if we remove the toilet, I'm guessing I'm the only one holding it back right now

BF and architect are both completely convinced of this idea

That sounds like a plan. In the early days, one toilet is going to be enough for sure, and then later you have the option to expand if you need to

Really sucks about your boss problems

BUT I would really really really advise against 1 toilet. CAN you live with only one? Sure. I did it. It sucked. I COULD live with out a computer too, or cell phone, or heck even a car. But yeah that would suck too.

If you can put it under the stairs instead, then go for it. Big kitchens rule. Just watch out you do not give up to much storage area.

I'm also thinking about parents who have their share of health problems. My father's back is in really bad shape, so there's a chance he won't be able to do stairs in the future. It would suck big time if that meant he wouldn't be able to come over, because he wouldn't be able to use the bathroom.

The toilet under the stairs is a good compromise, but we'd have to expand our house so the sitting area is further away from the kitchen before BF would be OK with it ...

A lot of people have advised me against it

We only have one toilet right now. Sometimes I get irritated when BF spends half an hour there and I really have to go. But I don't think it sucks that bad. Of course we only have the one floor right now. In our house the toilet would be on the first floor. Which would mean: little kids always have to go upstairs, visitors always have to go upstairs, if you're sitting in the garden you have to go upstairs, ... Maybe people will get annoyed.
I really want the second toilet, but I want the awesome kitchen even more! (I'll post a picture very soon

)
We have a storage room on the first floor, two more storage rooms and an extra room (could be a desk, library, second bathroom, ...) on the attic. So storage won't be a problem

Finished my first bottle of water of this day. On to the second!

Sencha in my cup. Had some coffee coming in. I need to do a better job of going to bed by 9:30. That extra hour make s a world of difference.

Stupid to put so much thought into 1 or 2 toilets when there are millions of people who don't even have a proper home.

Sucks big time. We have an emergency meeting with all the researchers in our unit in a couple of minutes to discuss if and what we can do to help (or protest)

If storage is not a problem, then move the toilet some place else and get the bigger kitchen.

Just wait till your pregnant, and have to go and he is in the only bathroom. That will really bless your relationship.
