It's the -s1 option of mobigen.
Also, google for pdbshred.zip and read the txt inside. It mentions a key which might work.

Interesting...I went looking for pdbshred. I know nada about encryption. Read the txt...clear as mud for me.

But...I ran the exe. Anyway.

pdbshred -a filename.prc outfilename (note, no extension)

And it ran.

And it gave me output.

outfilename.htm
outfilename001.bmp
outfilename002.bmp

So now I need to look through the html I guess and see if there are any changes I need to make. Anyone have any direction on that? I understand basic html. Here is the head section:

After making any edits necessary, I can just use html2mobi or Mobi Creator to build a file, right?

Quickie update. I have a total of 18 files from the same publisher. pdbshred worked on all but 1 in that I now have html and bmp files for each. On the 1 it did not work on, mobi2mobi did work. 15 of the files were purchased in 2005 or prior. 3 this year. In future I'll probably buy .lit and use ConvertLit.

html2mobi does not use the all the metadata. So just give appropriate arguments to html2mobi and use mobi2mobi to fix the remaining problems. Or use mobigen or Mobi Creator on the html file.

Hey guys - I'm back with something I don't understand. It's kinda related to mobi2mobi, but also kinda related to mobi reader. And maybe just M$ Windows being a pain.

I have an AZW file. I dedrm'd it fine. I can open it in MobiReader on my PC and it works fine. But, the author is displayed as "LastName, FirstName," --- it's that little comma after the firstname that I want to get rid of.

Here's the command as I ran it (marked and pasted from command window):
F:\ebooks\Working>mobi2mobi.exe "title.mobi" --outfile fixcomma.mob
i --author "Heath, Lorraine"

Then I right clicked on the file and chose "Open With" > Reader. MobiReader opened and opened the file. I clicked back to my ebook library page and the comma still showed after the firstname. I deleted the mbp file and relaunched with no change.

So then, I deleted the mobi and mpb file and closed reader. Then instead of doing "Open With", I copied the file into the library myself and then launched reader.

Guess what? No comma.

Anyone have ANY idea why that would make a difference? I mean, I have no problem manually copying the file in instead of using "open with" but why would that make a difference?

Ignore this...figured it out...number of characters including the spaces and commas...duh.
Quote:
To make this more relevant to mobi2mobi, what do the 15 vs. 16 in the results below signify? Just curious.

When I run mobi2mobi with no arguments except the infile, this is the author info it shows:
EXTH item: 100 - Author - 16 - Heath, Lorraine,

When I did the same against the fixcomma file, it shows:
EXTH item: 100 - Author - 15 - Heath, Lorraine

I think it is MobiReader opening the file that is still in the 'library'. It is not opening the new file, but the one it already has all the information about. Things like thumnails etc. It does not replace the old file.

Try deleting the file from within the MobiReader first and then open the 'new' file. You will see the new file is copied to My eBooks and all your changes are visible.

I had some problems myself with that when I was editting books. I had a book with no TOC. I checked it by opening it with the reader. Then I created a TOC in the original HTML file, used the Creator to build a new file.

From within the Creator I opened the file in the Reader, no TOC visible. It took a while before I discovered that deleting the file from within the Reader should be done first. Now when I changed the book it did show up after a rebuild.

I'm not sure if it is a security thing. This way you cannot overwrite a book in your library by accident. But the nice thing to would by: Simply tell you there is a book with the same filename and do you want to replace it

MobiPerl 0.0.39

I did a release 0.0.39 which essentially just is all pdurrant's fixes integrated in the code. I think I added some country code also. The Perl code is at:

https://dev.mobileread.com/dist/tompe/mobiperl/

I have not tested all changes so let me know if something is not working.

Thanks - I've downloaded 0.0.39 and replaced my hacked 0.0.38 versions. I'm a bit busy at work at present, but hopefully I'll have time to test things a bit over the next week or two.

I came across pdbshred.zip which contains some interesting info on a strange form of protected Mobipocket file. Hopefully this might explain the strange CyBook manual format. But I haven't had time to look at it properly.

Thanks again for all your work on these very useful tools.

Paul

Hi,

I converted a couple of html files to mobi by html2mobi and uploaded them to my Kindle.
They show up on the Kinlde (with correct title/author info), but when I try to open them, the message "The selected item could not be opened" appears. What could be the problem?
The source html files were scientific papers saved off the publisher's website ("web page complete" option). I used the Windows executable for html2mobi. Thanks.

Which version of MobiPerl?

I will test html2mobi tonight and check that I can open the files on my Cybook. If html2mobi works for me I need the generated mobi file to be able to say something else.

It was 0.0.38 -- downloaded the Windows executable. Thanks for your help!
It might be something specific to the Kindle though.

Was it my version or the pdurrant version?

And what was the command line?

It has worked before without any problem on the Kindle. Maye the HTML file contains some strange character or some strange character set?

It was your version, I believe (downloaded from https://dev.mobileread.com/dist/tompe/mobiperl/). The command line was just

html2mobi --author AUTHOR filename.htm

It could be the characters -- there are math formulas in the paper. Although I thought that in that particular paper the formulas were just rendered as images, but I may be mistaken. The mobi file was displayed properly in the Mobipocket Reader, but not on the Kindle. The second mobi file I created the same way actually caused the Mobipocket Reader to crash.

What was the version number?

I just tested the latest version of html2mobi on a test case and on my Cybook the generated files was fine. If you could give me the html file and included images that causes problem for you I will test it (email: tpe@ida.liu.se, or make it available via a web page). Maybe there is a format problem with the images?

Here are the Windows binaries for the 0.0.39 release. I don't have that many prc files, so I didn't run extensive tests, but both mobils and mobi2html seemed to work just fine.

Enjoy.
