You can use calibre and the sony software together. If you do that, use the save to disk function in calibre to save the ebook files to the disk (either directly onto the reader or on a folder on your hard drive and then use the sony software to transfer them).

I wonder when Waterstones plan to ship them. Wednesday to arrive Thursday or Thursday to arrive Friday. Seems a bit silly to launch an Ebook store but nobody has the readers until the day after (Although they could be selling them instore I suppose).

I did phone up to ask today but the chap I spoke to didn't know. I also got the impression he thought I was talking about a book.

I paid for DHL shipping so I'd know when it was coming. I'm reading a Baen book I bought on my Iliad and I had to force myself to turn it on tonight on the train home. I didn't want to use the Iliad. I want my new reader

Hi All,

Waterstones have them in at the moment but are not allowed to sell.

Swindon has 9, of which 3 where sold yesterday on pre order. They have someone doing a demonstration on the Thursday morning but unfortunately a routine check up at the dentist means I wont be there until late morning.

Tried to get them to let me pick up on Wednesday evening but they are not allowed they tell me.

Can't stand waiting for anything. My last car was nearly £50k and waiting a week was almost more than I could bear!

Regards

Chris

I'm horribly impatient when waiting for new tech. If they ship tomorrow I'll have to wait in for the delivery on Thursday. It's like a kid waiting for christmas

Hi Flub,

I know what you mean, it drives me nuts waiting for anything. Totally impatient. As a lover of gadgets this is a bad thing. If I dare read about some new technology I will want it straight away.

Some years ago I was at the Bristol Hi Fi show and the new plasma flat screen technology had just started to rear it's head. On two stands we met the UK Sales Manager and both asked the same question: Can you afford to spend £10,000 and not be bothered by it? My reply was 'no' and the salesmen both replied that the technology was not there and the screens would fail inside a year. They where selling to people who could throw £10k down the drain!

The interesting thing about this was I told my Wife when we moved into our current house in 1999 that I wanted a flat screen tv on 'that' wall. They had not been invented then, apart from a few ideas!

I now have a plasma and projector screen doing exactly what I wanted it to do 9 years ago!

Best regards

Chris

Harry - Just wondering why you still don't have a Sony eReader, especially given your commitment to it and the support you give everyone here who owns one.

Because I decided to standardise on the MobiPocket eBook format, which is supported on multiple devices - I can read the same books on my mobile phone, my PDA, and my CyBook Gen3. The Gen3, although more expensive than the Sony, also has a number of features which, for me personally, make it worth paying extra for, such as dictionary lookup, the ability to load your own fonts onto the machine, proper support for font families, and a user-replaceable battery.

None of that means that I don't "like" the Sony - it is a very good machine. Just that, for me personally, the Gen3 meets my needs better.

Hmm. My local branch has stock. I wonder if they'll let me preorder. It'd save me 5 quid shipping.

I just cancelled my preorder. The local branch of Waterstones has 15 in stock and my name is attached to one of them

I'll pick it up before I go into work in the morning.

No, the screen used by the PRS-505 is identical to that of the Kindle (and is also the same screen used by all the other 6" devices - the Gen3, the Hanlin, etc).
