It was Carlos Ruiz Zafón, indeed.
He wrote two trilogies: the first one (Niebla) is in the Y.A. category and represents his early works; the second one (The Cemetery of Forgotten Books) is for more advanced readers and his style has improved. And finally, Marina is a stand alone Y.A. book.
The Shadow of the Wind is amongst my favourite books, so much that I decided to have read all of his books by the end of 2013 (with breaks in between so I started last year).

If you want to give it a try, The Rose of Fire (prequel of The Cemetery of Forgotten Books) used to be free, at least at Amazon and Kobo.
