Interesting how many fall into some category of "horror" or have a creepy dark twist. I suppose the length and PD requirement pushes for that... the nothing-really-happens short story may be entertaining but is forgettable, while scary or intriguing lasts longer in our minds.

Science fiction in the public domain is a much smaller pool of stories, and a lot of them are either mysteries with a technological twist or "shocking revelations" that fail to be shocking to modern readers.

For myself, I'd pick out one or more (probably one, given the collection) stories by Saki; I'm fond of The Lull, The Story-Teller, and Sredni Vashtar.

Yep, that's where I first read it too, greta read... it's also in DeLillo's short story collection "The Angel Esmeralda" and license violations are pretty sure to be pursued...

Shirley Jackson's work is now public domain in Life+50 countries; MR has a Life+70 policy. So The Lottery is not eligible for upload here.

Well, "here" is subject to the user, no? Oh, well, in any case was ANY version of this anthology ever created? I think I'd like to create my own to share with students. I know a lot of these stories are favorites of young people even today.
