Thanks to the pirate community, I have what actually appears to be a good PDF. I've gotten as far as putting it into a Word doc, but if you've ever done that conversion, you probably know that you don't get clean editable copy. For starters, I have to do one of those little tricks to get rid of the hard returns at the end of every line. Project for another day. But it is in my sights. |

Among other things, she's on the board at the Art Director's Club, and got SFWA to hold its annual Author's and Editors event there. I worship at her feet for doing so, and told her. The only problem with holding the event at the ADC is distraction: it's hard to carry on conversations with folks when all you want to do is gawk at the stuff on the walls. Original paintings by Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth, Arthur Rackham... If it's anybody in illustration, the ADC probably has some of their work, and periodically trot it out for exhibitions. Quote:

Er, true. There were dedicated word processors and editors on big systems, but the PC wasn't ubiquitous, and personal word processing didn't occur. Should have remembered that from the pub date.

Quick question for those of you who use iPhones: Do you know anything about the ebook software called Stanza that runs on the iphone? My wife came across it, and I read a bit about it. Looks like it can be used with a variety of formats. The article said it could read Kindle books, so I assume that means it can read mobipocket files. Should this be on my radar?
(She was looking into whether my expressed desire for a Kindle (maybe for Christmas) was really a desire for an iPhone. The answer to that is probably no, in view of the monthly fees, but I still feel I should know about these things.) |

I reviewed Stanza, along with the other iPhone reader applications, on Teleread.
What Stanza reads is the ePub format. It can sort of read the MobiPocket (and hence Kindle) format, but does so by converting it into ePub—and under the current version of the conversion software, loses all formatting (including bold and italics). It's an interesting reader, but I don't feel it's quite ready for prime time yet. (Now, it might not be a bad idea at all to have an ePub format download of the book, too—I expect someone here could create one for you out of the HTML version.) The one that reads Mobipocket natively is Bookshelf, which costs $10. Stanza will cost $15 when it's out of beta. Really, the best thing for reading the book on the iPhone right now is eReader, which is free, and—more importantly—takes advantage of the polished markup that I did. ![]() |

While my preferred format is .lit (and .prc) as i read my ebooks with my windows mobile cell phone, I've started downloading .pdb from fictionwise for my new iphone. The v.2 of the neptune crossing.pdb is with cover, and the formatting is much better than v.1. I've just upgraded to ereader 1.2, and downloaded stanza for iphone and for my desktop. Still need to find the time to check their capabilities, though.
I've found that while ereader 1.2 has some nice updates, I like the display of 1.1 better. Maybe it's just me. To Jeff, Strange Attractors .lit should be in your inbox by now. |
