I'm including the cover because I checked with the art director at Tor and she said it should be okay as long as it's a giveaway promotion and I made sure to credit the artist. (Which I should have done anyway, but forgot to do until she reminded me.)

If I sold copies, I'd probably have to take it off.

Incidentally, do you still have electronic copy for Seas of Ernathe around? Laser Books editions are a little hard to find these days.

It might be an excellent candidate for a future ebook release, and a boon to completists who want the complete Starrigger's series.

Still have? That's from the typewriter days, son. However...

Thanks to the pirate community, I have what actually appears to be a good PDF. I've gotten as far as putting it into a Word doc, but if you've ever done that conversion, you probably know that you don't get clean editable copy. For starters, I have to do one of those little tricks to get rid of the hard returns at the end of every line.

Project for another day. But it is in my sights.

I've checked the undernet and found two formats of your book (html & lit) would you like me to send it to you?

Tor's art director is Irene Gallo. She's a splendid person and a wonderful AD. She has a blog here. I am extravagantly fond of the work she's been doing for Tor.

Among other things, she's on the board at the Art Director's Club, and got SFWA to hold its annual Author's and Editors event there. I worship at her feet for doing so, and told her. The only problem with holding the event at the ADC is distraction: it's hard to carry on conversations with folks when all you want to do is gawk at the stuff on the walls. Original paintings by Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth, Arthur Rackham... If it's anybody in illustration, the ADC probably has some of their work, and periodically trot it out for exhibitions.

Er, true. There were dedicated word processors and editors on big systems, but the PC wasn't ubiquitous, and personal word processing didn't occur. Should have remembered that from the pub date.

(The very first electronic text editor I worked with was about then, on a mainframe computer at a bank. I became the resident expert in the use and abuse of it... )

I have. I'm a SysAdmin by trade, and data transformation is probably half of what I wind up doing. Line ending conversions like that are the easy part, since tools to do it are part of the standard kit.

Quick question for those of you who use iPhones: Do you know anything about the ebook software called Stanza that runs on the iphone? My wife came across it, and I read a bit about it. Looks like it can be used with a variety of formats. The article said it could read Kindle books, so I assume that means it can read mobipocket files. Should this be on my radar?

(She was looking into whether my expressed desire for a Kindle (maybe for Christmas) was really a desire for an iPhone. The answer to that is probably no, in view of the monthly fees, but I still feel I should know about these things.)

There is a whole forum devoted to iPhones. Stanza is covered there. Also it is in the wiki.

Stanza is two parts: (currently) beta software for Mac OS/X and Windows that handles an assortment of formats and creates books that can be read on the iPhone, and a client iPhone app to view the books it generates.

More details are here: http://www.lexcycle.com/

I reviewed Stanza, along with the other iPhone reader applications, on Teleread.

What Stanza reads is the ePub format. It can sort of read the MobiPocket (and hence Kindle) format, but does so by converting it into ePub—and under the current version of the conversion software, loses all formatting (including bold and italics). It's an interesting reader, but I don't feel it's quite ready for prime time yet. (Now, it might not be a bad idea at all to have an ePub format download of the book, too—I expect someone here could create one for you out of the HTML version.)

The one that reads Mobipocket natively is Bookshelf, which costs $10. Stanza will cost $15 when it's out of beta. Really, the best thing for reading the book on the iPhone right now is eReader, which is free, and—more importantly—takes advantage of the polished markup that I did.

Just drop the PDF into mobipocket creator - it will convert it to html and get rid of all those pesky hard returns at the same time (works for text files also). Then read the HTML into word and start from there.

While my preferred format is .lit (and .prc) as i read my ebooks with my windows mobile cell phone, I've started downloading .pdb from fictionwise for my new iphone. The v.2 of the neptune crossing.pdb is with cover, and the formatting is much better than v.1. I've just upgraded to ereader 1.2, and downloaded stanza for iphone and for my desktop. Still need to find the time to check their capabilities, though.

I've found that while ereader 1.2 has some nice updates, I like the display of 1.1 better. Maybe it's just me.

To Jeff, Strange Attractors .lit should be in your inbox by now.
