Well, nothing's helped. I've only got pdfs, epubs and txt files now, and it's still the same; 6 seconds to get to "books" and 2:30 to get to "shelves"

So if the covers are generated on the fly, are they saved for permanent use later if not why not. And why should the shelves take longer to show then the book list, seems to me it should be just as fast once the actual shelf is created and books compiled to it.

Just for kicks have you tried the little reset button on the bottom of the glo? Its in the lower left hand coner of the unit at between the fc xxxxx and funkey flower type symbol or recycling symbol.. it will not erase your unit but may clean it up and flush any thing in memory out. It may not speed it up but I have seen a simple reset fix some aberrations that occurred after a firmware update.

Jack; I think that's the same as doing a power off / power on!

To my mind this sounds very much like a corrupted database on the unit. I *think* that you could try the following; backup (say via an xcopy) the entire displayed file system while the kobo is mounted (be sure to include hidden and system files and all directories). Something like
Code:
md C:\MyKoboBackup
xcopy /e /h /k G:\ C:\MyKoboBackup
then do a logout from the Kobo account menu. This will do a delete of the database on the Kobo but will leave your ePubs on the device.

Do the resetup of the device and see how it is.

If no better, you could then just restore your backup
Code:
xcopy /e /h /k /r C:\MyKoboBackup G:\
This all assumes that G:\ is where the Kobo is mounted; change directories and locations to meet YOUR needs.

After logging out of my kobo account, I tried to do a setup, but it said "device already configured". Is there a step missing ?

I think there is a very different way the Kobo Devices handle a reset and a power off and then on. The power off I think just leaves things in the Static memory of the device and the Reset would flush the same cache memory. Which would be why the result is cleaner then a power cycle.
Backing up is a valid point as well... And connecting to the desktop, as well may assist in some stability. That said doing a factory reset might eliminate a bad image of the firmware and allow for a clean install, this will of course result in the need to have the device read all the books from the sd card into the data base but may result in a faster load.

Backing up and doing the steps you suggest are definitely a valid option as well and could very well save some time and head aches.

I am curious as to the brand of the card though perhaps the issue is the card itself and not the device? An offbrand card could cause issue as well with faulty memory and voltage levels in the card which could cause issue in stability and access times perhaps.

It's an official SanDisk. I tried both suggestions but no success.

The pinhole reset just flushes the device... Doing a factory reset from the settings menu will format the device and restore it to a clean install. Make sure the device is off and the memory card removed before you do this. You want to make sure the device is a clean install... connect to the desktop follow the setup instructions. wait till the firmware downloads and installs. Once the firmware installs you can insert the memory card the glow will reread the books on the memory card and add them to the data base. Then you can connect again to the computer and use calibre to set up the shelves. Also make sure you eject the reader when you need to disconnect from the pc as failure to do so can result in corruption of the device...

Sandisk is my preference actually for a memory card.

When you do the logout, the final step the Kobo should do is to turn itself off.

When you then power it on, it should go into Setup mode offering you the option of either a wireless setup OR a computer one (ie plugged in via USB).

As far as I know the only reason for doing a PIN reset is if the device is hung in a non responsive state.

The power off / power on and the post pin state both reboot the Kobo, relaunching the Kobo Linux kernel from the internal storage, and loading all code / data from the same storage.

Ok, so I did the factory reset. I re-inserted my sd card, and "shelves" loads as fast as "books", but no books are showing up under "shelves". What I don't understand is that in Calibre I had selected the option to delete empty shelves.

So that I can make sure nothing (hopefully) goes wrong this time, could one of you guys tell me if these step are correct please ?:

1. Download the books from my Kobo to my Calibre library
2. Edit the Metadata on the books.

Here's where it gets confusing:

3a. Eject Kobo and then re-connect and allow Calibre to sync the modded metadata with the Kobo

or

3b. Delete all the books from my Kobo and upload the books (with the modded metadata) via Calibre

Kobo must now connect to caliber to load the books to the shelves.
once you do that books will show up. don't forget to eject the kobo after the calibre program is done.

The books are already on the device. Now that Kobo recognized the books, and are reinstalled after reading the sd card you can reconnect to calibre and it should place the b ooks into the shelves. make sure the desktop kobo software is closed.
